I was thinking of some of the Michael signs that are out there, and the fact that anything redemption produces almost exclusively has the flaming sword and nothing else. I assumed that was because Redemption doesn't own any really super great art.

most mtg and yugioh mats retail in the $15-25 range, with limited edition ones (such as mats awarded to tournament attendees/winners) reaching into the hundreds. $20-30 for a redemption mat is actually very reasonable.

I don't mind adjusting my style if it makes sense. To me, Fortresses and set asides often go hand in hand, which is why the Fortresses and Land of bondage should be reversed on the current playmat (see RTSManiac's picture on page 1). California style works best if both players are using the mat because you run out of room on the table for other styles to have a "battle" area. If the mat is just used for territory organization and it will be a little bit more loose in design (read: not all outlines will be printed), then I think the following items need to be printed on the mat somewhere:
Deck Pile
Discard Pile
Land of Bondage
Land of Redemption

The rest of Redemption's piles are pretty easily distinguishable (unless there are conversions).

I would assume that room on the playmat makes the battle area awkwardly small? Personally, I'm not against the rulebook one. I'm relatively flexible with the idea.

well not only do i think the majority of players either use the one in the rulebook or a slightly altered version of it, but i think it will be greatly beneficial to newer players as well, especially on something so mass produced.

You can, it is just that particular design uses the california version. The battles are to talk place off of the playmat anyway. This is only for holding and organizing your territory

i have several other ccg mats and have used them for redemption purposes. the standard mat is pretty big, and i never found myself requiring extra space to push a character into battle.

I agree, if there is going to be a standard layout printed on the playmat then it should be the official layout from the rulebook. Another option is the simply print an awesome collage of Redemption art on the mat. You could still put GoYS in one of the top corners to represent a Land of Redemption. But without a designated area on the mat players would still have the freedom to choose the layout if they wanted.

As for fitting everything on the mat, the standard size does not have enough room. It's 14 inches tall. Redemption cards are 3.5 inches tall without sleeves. That leaves enough room for a row of Heroes, a row of ECs and a row of LS. The field of battle would be off the playmat.

I fully support both of Gabe's points quoted above. I certainly vote in favor of freedom to choose card layout, but if a layout is preferred, I think the rulebook version would be the better choice.

Exactly. I can buy a week's worth of meals for my family for the extra $15, and still have my cards comfortably sitting on a fluffy playmat.

He was looking for feedback. My feedback as a cash-strapped father is that if I am just looking for a playmat to put my cards on, then a generic one for $10 is more economical than a $25 aesthetically-appealing one.

Depending on how large the playmats are, I would be interested if it was >$15. If they can fit 12-15 characters of the same alignment, that'd be fantastic. (I play T2, and really unbalanced decks...)

Of course my wife grumbles about protein and other weird health words, but you can't beat the shear enjoyment of eating Ramen noodles.
