Testimonials / Blessed to be back!
« Last post by agurthewise on May 20, 2025, 07:20:56 PM »
So I grew up playing Redemption as a kid in elementary school. We had Redemption packs at the local family Christian stores and at our book fair. I remember playing with my friend very casually, just playing big angels, big number enhancements, nothing really competitive, but it was fun. I quit redemption when my friend stopped playing.

I got involved in other card games, started with World of Warcraft TCG and moved onto Magic the gathering and played it for a long time. I had a small YouTube video series and paid articles for mtg. After a while I moved onto other online games and dropped tcgs.

Fouryears ago when I got engaged to my fiancé (now amazing wifey Becka), I was looking through my mtg cards to sell and ran across my Redemption cards.

I thought I should check if the game still going like or if these cards are worth anything, so I could sell them. I looked it up on the discord. I hopped on and I saw the game still going in. I get a message like immediately from Roy “ do you wanna play Redemption today?”

Wow it’s crazy like it’s still going and there’s people in San Antonio that play  Redemption. He invited me over play a few games it was really awesome. The whole play group is awesome and I started going by. I’m not the person to buy product for myself so I didn’t just buy boxes Redemption to get back into it, but I started playing with the locals. They gave me a lot of free cards and then I entered some drafts and started collecting . It was a huge blessing.

I love Redemption because God‘s word is a passion of mine so to be able to have a passion of mine intersect with another passion of mine in in in playing strategic games is really fun and I love the community. I love ability that we can pray together at tournaments that we can honor God together that we can encourage each other in the faith.

This is the legendary Kitty Jones that Marc has mentioned in his Redemption homecoming testimonial:

Marc, I share with excitement a page from Kitty's book and a letter written to her by one of your youthful playgroup members you indeed had planted not just the seeds of Redemption into but have blessed him with God's love!

I first got captivated by the C&D starter decks as a preteen. Saw it in a Christian bookstore that Mr MiYoda brought Redemption to. The store owner, Kitty Jones, opened her doors to allow a playgroup to form that I had the privilege of leading after Mr MiYoda got us on our feet with gameplay. I played semi-competitively and hosted NY States and even the NE Regional as a teenager. The most competitive I have ever been was at 2010 nats (the only nats I attended in my younger years) when I got absolutely demolished in T1. Mr MiYoda was one of the many that 5-0'd me that day. Was my own fault for trying to be cute and run a D-heavy Zebulun deck! I did at least place in the top 10 in T1 Multi and (I think) Sealed Deck. However, my most fond memory of my younger Redemption playgroup days was personally evangelizing to one of the playgroup members and witnessed him coming to Christ.

I left the game in 2011 and gave my collection of cards to my younger brother. Career, moving away from the playgroup, and marriage were the main factors. I was not plugged into the broader Redemption community much and forgot about Redemption until Covid hit. Our church ministries were hit, and any sort of Christian fellowship and evangelism seemed much more difficult. Over time as we navigated our way through how to reopen ministries and do new things that would work better in the uncertain environment, I remembered Redemption. I was one of the leaders at my church after pitching the idea I started planning on starting a new playgroup there. Surprisingly, my younger brother still had all my old cards and after my 10-year hiatus from the game, we have been meeting regularly as the Moravia Redemption Guild. Every 2 weeks we meet, and I have a captive audience to share the gospel as we discuss the Scripture behind a card and there is opportunity for discipleship as we win and lose games together in tournaments. I have been blessed to lead this group alongside Zack (trustee at our church) and both of our wives help as well.

Testimonials / Finding Redemption

As a person that loves to play many different kind of games, I've always been drawn back to collectable card games. As I searched for a game that I would really love to play and have others to play with I went down the road to playing Magic like so many of our community has. I know that we have many who still play the game and may not be convicted as I was in putting my money and my spiritual life into the game, but something just felt off to me. I was reminded of the verse in Galatians that talks about the works of the flesh and one of those things was sorcery which is what the game of Magic draws on. I was in a struggle for doing what I felt was right spiritually by not giving in to my fleshly desire to play a game that just seemed so appealing to me. I mean, what could hurt? It's only a game, right?
For me the answer was no! There is a spiritual battle here and I couldn't allow my mind to be driven by what Magic was introducing. One day my wife and I were in a heated discussion about me having the game in the house and then it hit me, she was right as always, and Holy Spirit was speaking to me as well. I decided that I was going to throw the collection that I’d just spent hundreds of dollars on away, not sell because I didn’t think others should own these cards either.
After this event I was speaking to a good friend of mine and he said, “Well if you’re not playing Magic any more but are looking for a similar game, have you tried Redemption?”. “What is Redemption?”, I asked. He then proceeded to tell me about this wonderful game that has become my most favorite game to play. This person, a lot of the community that has been around for a while will know, is Mark Underwood, a former elder of the game.
Since then, I have been telling everyone that I know about the game and have even got a small playgroup together, with the help of Stephen Brooks, that meets on a weekly bases and is the first regular meeting Redemption group in the history of the game to meet in Arkansas. We meet each week on Thursday's at Stephens house and run an average of 14 players a week. With the blessing of the Redemption elder team and after only three years of me finding the game, we are hosting the first ever National Tournament in Arkansas on the 30th official year of the game.
It has been quite a journey these last couple of years and I’m anxiously awaiting to see what’s next for this game that our Lord has blessed Rob Anderson with the creativity to design and to those who give countless hours to keep the game fresh and relevant while sowing seeds of scripture to those who play.

I was told I could not speak on behalf of Redemption this year. I did NOT expect the reason why....after 7 years of loving to teach this game to this amazing group at their annual camp, they lovingly surprise me with this....honor...so blessed!!! Thank you RRs...BUT many thanks belong to all of you for embracing Redemption as an activity in your organization! Love y'all.

The sea or field of PowWow2025 campers (lots of them new & several may not have joined the photo shoot and stayed under the tree shade) --- the sea or field of RRs from where as many would have learned Redemption or at the least own Redemption giveaways by the week's end. God has done it again at this camp!

Cmdr John, who attended one of my Redemption classes at Leadership Training couple of years ago, practices w Jayce who finally decided to learn the game. Jayce had been assisting me at PowWow Redemption HQ since a couple of years ago but never played til this weekend.

Jayce is the younger brother of Harrion (who will be remembered in STXRR history for teaching No 1 (Cmdr Jasone Bone) the game at PowWow 2021 on his 10th birthday.
