Is it a new version of the Wii?  Haven't seen any advertisements for it.

If I had money...

I generally wait awhile for new game systems though, because initially there aren't that many games, and I prefer catching up as opposed to waiting for games.

I know what you mean. I am still waiting for a good game to come out on the PS3 so I can finally buy it.

There are great games for the system, I just don't have money to buy anything...period!  LOL!

The Wii U is pointless. They made an iPad in to a controller except its 10 times heavier and can't do any of the other things an iPad can do.

There is one thing a Wii U controller can do that an iPad cannot: beat an Apple groupie senseless with it's 15 pound controller.

I am a Nintendo groupie, but even I won't be buying this anytime soon. My understanding is that the handheld controller is only available to one player when the Wii U releases. This means that the other players need to use regular controllers. Nintendo has said that they will expand the use of the handheld controller to two players eventually, but not more than that.

Thus, the Wii U seems to be intended to elevate the gameplay for single-player games. That is not why I bought my original Wii. What I have always loved about Nintendo consoles is their adaptability to four-player games (in the same room). The Wii U is a shift to playing alone in your room.

All of the above is based off articles I have read from varying sources. If someone has other information, I would like to hear it. As I said, I am a huge Nintendo fan, but I am currently not very excited about the Wii U.

Nintendo has probably finally realized most multiplayer sessions do not happen in one living room, but online. Bro-op on the same TV, albeit nostalgiac, is a dying notion.

I for one am glad to see Nintendo start taking its consoles more seriously.

I -1 the above because the quote implies that marketing to families is not serious.  I am a Nintendo fan because of their marketing style throughout the years.  I looked at getting my son a PSP for Christmas/birthday and the games for him are limited.

I understand that it is not your stage of life right now, but to discount and discredit a lot of people as not seriously worth considering seems highly unfair and insensitive.  In fact, I'm not sure their demographic has changed according to their commercials.
Why try to win over the Xbox & Playstation demographic (which they likely will not) at the expense of losing their demographic (which they likely will)?  If they get a few more people, then fine...but for the most part I think it is a smart model to cater to parents buying for children.  Not a bunch of 20 somethings wanting to shoot each other online.

I don't mean to be contentious with you, but I find that my family's existence and buying power is considered not "serious" and out of date.

@ YMT, it just gives my 3 boys something new to fight over using (read: the steering wheel when it first came out for MarioKart).

You read much too far between the lines SS. How or why you arrived at 'discrediting' and deeming the family demographic 'not worthy' by taking my words out of context is simply beyond me. Let me make this very clear to you so you have no trouble at all understanding what I'm saying and mince my words any further. When I say seriously, I mean catering to those that care more about the specs of a machine than waving a magic wand in front of a TV. Packaging novelties with a machine can only go so far under Nintendo's business model; at least this time their novelty can actually function as a acceptable tablet, thus expanding their demographic even further. Is Nintendo not fully capable of delivering to both demographics? Are they not able to release a high-end machine with some decent up to date specs (and finally, someone start a drumroll, NATIVE HD) while also still bringing us the same great games from the same in-house franchises we have known and loved for decades? Yeah, share the road buddy.

In no way do I endorse ignoring the 'existence' of the family demographic. No hate crime has been committed. I am not a familyist. In fact, I have a family of my own.

By the way, that one best selling franchise that involves 20 somethings shooting at each other? Yeah, launch title. I'm pretty sure Nintendo doesn't need anyone telling them where their target demographic lies. ::)

I think SS may have quoted the wrong sentence.   ;)

Your "Bro-Op" comment seemed to be more of a hit to family-oriented games (as he and I view them), albeit unintentionally. As a father of 3 children, I want my kids playing together in the same room with me, not online. I think that is what SS was getting at. ;D

With that said, I don't see you as anti-family, MKC. People like me are, in fact, nostalgic, but we are unwilling to accept that we are anitiquated.  :o

YMT is probably right...it was the combo of terms of "bro-op" and "serious" that ruffled my feathers.

I apologize for reading too much into your comments and I apologize for the slight that I implied against you MKC.

I guess I become too passionate about Nintendo's well-known history of providing great family games.  I am aware that X-box and Playstation are better known for their graphics and mature games (the top sellers--to my knowledge--being Halo & Call of Duty).  Which is not for me (or my family) because I don't care about the graphics or realism when I buy a system.  I go for the colorful, cartoonish interaction as I sit down with my kids to play.  I don't want Nintendo to lose who they are because that would cut off a valuable part of my life.

To answer your original question, I am like RR in my planned purchase of the WiiU.

Hey, I know all about the Bro-Op experience. I still have fond memories from when I was a kid of putting a piece of cardboard in the middle of our 13 inch tv so my brother couldn't screen-peek when we played shooters together. Videogame king was a rite of passage in a household of only two brothers...and rubber necking was met with swift consequences (usually yanking the controller wire out). Nowadays its all about these whippersnappers with their intarnets and wireless controllers. Oh, the nostalgia. :'(

You can have the best of both worlds. The Wii U still retains it's colorful and energetic games and displays it in breathe-taking beautiful HD. Check out this comparison of New Super Mario for both Wii and Wii U:

New Super Mario Bros: Wii vs Wii U Graphical Comparison

I may be a bit biased because I'm always a sucker for anything that's the new big videogame thing...but the fact a console has finally gone HD is a big leap for Nintendo. The sharpness on Mario's overalls makes me want to cry. ;D

I also happened to dig this up under the history section of the Wii U wiki:

Quote
The console was first conceived in 2008,[16] after Nintendo recognized several limitations and challenges with the Wii, such as the general public perception that the system catered primarily for a "casual" audience.[17] With Wii U, Nintendo explicitly wishes to lure "core" gamers back.[18] Game designer Shigeru Miyamoto admitted that the lack of HD and limited network infrastructure for the Wii also contributed to the system being regarded in a separate class to its competitors' systems, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.[19] It was decided that a new console would have to be made to accommodate significant structural changes.

So they are trying to reach out to us next-gen gamers with the Wii U. Nintendo's back in the game! :)

My friend Ryan has a Wii U deluxe and we played Nintendo Land today. It took 2 tries to start the system up, and it froze twice on us while we were playing, so I don't know if that's the game, or the system. The HD graphics looked great on Nintendo Land and Black Ops 2 Wii U looked on par or better than 360 Black Ops 2, so that's a plus.

Honestly my opinions of the system are mixed right now. There's no support for Gamecube accessories or games, so that's a big con for me. From what I've seen the online looks MUCH better than the Wii's almost lack of online, though it's still not on par with 360 or PS3. It can't play DVDs, CDs, or Blu-Ray, which is annoying but not that big a deal. Holding the Wii U pad takes time to get used to for sure, though I'm anxious to see how they will use it in the future (even if it's just a map for a new Metroid Prime or Super Metroid-esque game).

I almost certainly will be getting one though for the new Smash Bros, Zelda, Metroid (if it's not like Other M) and Pikmin 3(can't wait!), but I will not be getting it until then.
If you were to go on a trip... where would you like to go?
