anyone else a castlevania fan? the newest addition to the ds series comes out next tuesday, titled Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia. as with all the ds versions, its shaping up to look like a really great game. this is also a milestone for the entire series by introducing a sole female as the lead character. should be interesting! :)

I like the Castlevania GBA games; I haven't played them all, nor have I played any of the DS ones, but they are very fun. In fact, they're almost Metroidish in their gameplay. My only complaint is that half the time, I couldn't figure out what the heck I was supposed to be doing next.

right, i love the way they combined an action/adventure game with rpg elements. the gba games are fantastic (in that they followed in the tradition of castlevania: symphony of the night), but the ds castlevania series are about a million times better than gba ones. i would definately try to invest in one of the ds castlevania games, they are definately worth their weight in gold.

i agree that sometimes its a little easy to get stuck, but thats only because the maps are so huge and explorable :)

Portrait of Ruin is awesome.

If that's too much, look into the Castlevania Double Pack.  It has two excellent GBA games, Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, on a single GBA cart, and I got it for like $20.

i loved por too; the switching mechanic was pretty cool. i also really liked how you could team up with other players over wi-fi to take on boss rush mode.

the double pack is a pretty rare game. i havent seen a cartridge go through my store in ages, and we actually dont even have a SKU for it in the computer anymore. you might get lucky and score it off a used game store, or they might even have them at some lesser known department stores. and theres always ebay, too.

pound for pound though, the absolute best castlevania you can get for the value is dracula X chronicles. it actually contains 3 games in one: the remastered Rondo of Blood (before only released in japan, and also the precursor to castlevania: sotn), and you can unlock the original old-skool rondo of blood and castlevania: sotn. a MUST buy if you own a psp, and you can get it at gamestop for less than $20. now thats a steal.

not a female belmont, but a member of the order of ecclesia, an organization that has sworn to defeat the evil forces of Dracula. shanoa (the female lead) is the only member that can utilize the new game mechanic (similiar to the one used in aria and dawn of sorrow), which is controlling glyphs for supernatural effects.

well, soma looked more cartoony than anything to me. they actually changed the art direction of c: ooe, so it looks more serious than past ds entries.

im pretty sure the legend goes that only a male belmont can wield the whip 'vampire killer' and defeat dracula with it...

maria was a playable character in the sega saturn version of castlevania: symphony of the night, but she was actually richters sister-in-law...

finally got around to playing this game. i must say, im very pleased with the new art direction. it seems to have evolved from the 'kid style anime' from past ds versions to a more mature tone. the opening anime is, in a word, stunning.

also, the music is superb. it has an atmospheric and moody touch to it, yet still upbeat on the same measure...just perfect for the entire theme of the game. i should also note that anyone that has preordered this game at any gamestop nationwide will also receive the soundtrack to compliment it. should have any of you castlevania fans failed to preorder the game, but decide to pick it up later on, just let me know if you want the soundtrack...i have extra copies from unfulfilled preorders.

i cant yet give a good review on the gameplay, as i've only played the first couple of levels, but from what i've played so far im fairly satisfied. the story starts off pretty great too. definately a must have for any castlevania fan, and a nice compliment to any casual players ds collection.

I am definitely interested in the soundtrack.  The preorder bundle for Portrait of Ruin was quite possibly the most awesome thing I had ever seen in a game store.

i completely agree. i was surprised that we didnt offer a similiar bundle again this year. it was probably one of the most popular preorder items to go through our store that i can think of...you cant really beat an artbook, cool poster-like castlevania timeline, and an awesomely transparent castlevania stylus...all packaged in a (albeit flimsy) box with the castlevania seal. i still have everything except the stylus...i remember it cracked on me, and i guess i lost it later on. i want one of those stylus' again so bad...

pm me your address, and i'll ship the soundtrack out first chance :)
