If I battle challenge someone with no lost souls in their teritory and a lost soul gets put in play whether by a character ability enhancement ability or dominate ability does that battle challenge get turned into a rescue attempted or does it stay a battle challenge?

I am playing type 2. Why would there be a difference between t1 and t2?

In T2 you have to select which Lost Soul you're aiming to rescue when you begin battle. If there aren't any Souls (or you don't have access to any) then you can't select one so the battle remains a battle challenge.

According to the 3rd edition rule book rescuers choice is an optional advanced rule.

In Types 2 both Rescuer's Choice and Experience Credit are standard rules.

In both Type 1 and Type 2 you will typically see Name-on-Name Banus.

See the 10th Anniversary Rulebook  for more.

I/J rulebook is the most up-to-date, but it doesn't have all the info on artifacts, forts, and such. But it is still my favorite, it is very straightforward and clear.

You are correct, it doesn't have all of the information.  The reason is partially due to the I/J deck not having certain card types.

This post on the FAQ/Rulings Board Thread has the information on the optional rules, which as was pointed out are used in all T2 games.

In T2 you have to select which Lost Soul you're aiming to rescue when you begin battle. If there aren't any Souls (or you don't have access to any) then you can't select one so the battle remains a battle challenge.

There is a minor correction here, in that you can declare for any soul your opponent has in play, even if you do not have access.  You actually declare prior to heroes entering battle, and indicate that only that soul can be rescued as a result of the battle.  You can gain access during the battle (negating souls, exchanging heroes, adding sites, etc.), but you can declare any even if they are not 'accessible' based on the board state prior to battle.

I/J doesn't have info on Artifacts or Forts because they don't have them in those decks. it is to make the game simpler to new players.
