Sanctioned Online Tournaments!!!
« on: April 07, 2020, 01:04:07 PM »
+1
Hey Everyone,

I wanted to share some good news that I have been given today.  A couple of people have been discussing what it would take to try to host some online tournaments that way people can play and interact during this unusual time when we aren't allow to do those things in person.  Once we had a good plan in place, we presented it to Rob.  I'm pleased to announce that Rob has APPROVED!  Now that being said, you knew there had to be at least a little but.  So that but is that not all of our tournament hosts are allowed to run one of these, but everyone is allowed to participate!

What this is:
1) A TEMPORARY tournament format so that we can have some sanctioned games.

2) It is a local tournament only hosted by the handful of people that communicated this with Rob.
*If you were not part of this group, but would like to help out and/or judge let me know!

3) The games will be played only on Zoom that is set-up by the host for that week.
*www.zoom.com is the website.  You do not need to create an account, just log into the session # with password given during that day.
*Due to you not being able to join a session that isn't going on currently, I'll have several "test" sessions to make sure everyone can log in.

4) The only categories that will be offered will be LoC Type-1 constructed and Type-1 2-Player.
*Type-1 2-Player is only eligible for the people who choose to or cannot play LoC constructed.  This is to allow everyone to be able to play, but we want the main focus to really be LoC constructed.  Remember you get a special promo for participating in the LoC category and not Type-1 2-Player!

5) All games will be played "in person" through Zoom.  Sanctioned tournaments require physical cards, so Lackey and other programs will not be an option.  Sorry!
*Due to this we will require a deck list and a deck check before the start of each tournament to keep everything official!

6) There will be a $5 tournament fee.  This is to cover the cost of the tournament itself and shipping of promos/prizes to everyone that participates.
*Thanks to Roy I have basically every type of online payment type set up that we can use!
*Note: Due to the printer being closed, Rob has requested to send all promos/prizes to the individuals until after either the printers reopen and he gets more promos or the COVID-19 epidemic passes.

7) Keeping the spirit of a tournament, ALL games will be played on a Saturday.  We will finalize a start time when the tournaments are announced.

8] I have been given permission to run a tournament every week.  So you will need to pick a Saturday that you can plan to play 4 or more games, depending on the amount of people who have signed up.

9) If we have a very large number of players sign up for this, we will have everyone pick a Saturday that works best for them, and allow everyone to only attend one tournament a month, then start again the next month.

Notes:
I have approval to start this as quickly as possible.  So if you are interested please let me know and we can try to get this going!!!

This is a work in progress and might have a learning curve the first few weeks.  People need to be working on how they can show their territory while also being able to keep up with the opponent's territory as well.  So please start working on ways to do this instead of only testing the day of a tournament.  Time limits will also be increased to at least a hour, but might be longer if we see the games need some more time.

There will be some interactions that are complicated (mostly taking opponent's cards) that we will just have to work together to figure out a good solution.  We currently don't have a perfect online medium, so we just have to do the best with what we have.

Due to being flexible causing more questions than answers we are just posting the times/dates for the tournaments and then we will have people just sign up for the week and category they want to attend.

*All tournaments will require a deck list turned in before the deck checking begins.  If I can get them by the night before (if not earlier) that would be best.  If not you need to be on early enough for me to check the list and the deck.  Your deck will then be checked the day of the tournament and MUST be put in the same order as your deck list.  Send on discord / crashfach2002@hotmail.com / if you know another way, that is fine, just let me know you sent it.

*We are going to increase the time to play these games to 1 hour.  We will use the first couple of weeks to see if this is enough time or if we might need to extend it a little bit.  You WILL be playing a minimum of 3 games, if the participation number grows it could easily go up to 4.  So plan your day accordingly as we don't need/want anyone to drop out during the tournament.

*LoC cards WILL be available to play with for the Type 1 - 2 Player category from the start.  If LoC cards aren't allowed to be included this week, then we can't have LoC only which was one of the main reasons for this to begin with.

Online Local #:    (Games start at 3 PM EST)

Promos:  Participation: / LoC Only:  / Winner:

1:30 PM:  Zoom will be open for deck check, questions, general chatting.
3:00 PM:  Pairing will be made for the first game and players will be split into their games.

Current participants:

Type 1 - 2 Player:

LoC Constructed:

One other quick statement.  Due to the printer being closed and Rob not being able to get any new products right now.  I am going to request that you allow me to mail you promos once Rob starts getting product again.  That way we can save on shipping, and also make sure we actually have ALL of the promos/prizes you are owed.  If this request causes any issues with anyone, or you can't wait for some reason or another please message me here and I can make arrangements with you!

I will doing a "test day" tomorrow so people can make sure they can get connected no problem.  I'll post the numbers tomorrow.  Be sure to pick a date and category to get some games in!

I'll play LoC Constructed on 4/11 as long as we're allowed to use non-LoC meek LSs for the time being.

I hope to get confirmation on this soon!  With the limited amount available, most people aren't going to have enough meek souls.

I would like to play but only have time for 1 game. I'm typically a T2 player so if one other person wants to play T2 could we do T2-2P?

If you want to get on while others are on and hang out during deck check and play a Type 2 game for fun you can probably do that.  Right now I have permission to run a 2 category local of which we had pretty much determined would be Type 1 - 2 Player and LoC Constructed.  We can see how these go and possibly discuss this.  One major concern right now is the time limits.  We are already moving the time limit up to 1 hour for Type 1, and I'm still concerned that won't be enough time, I can't imagine how long a Type 2 game would last on this medium.  I also know with dealing with computers and phones seeing territory is probably going to be the biggest obstacle, and Type 2 territories can get very crazy.  But I'm cool discussing this with people and seeing how this goes.  If you do want to play a game or two, it might not be a bad idea to do and see how this things look/feel.

If the players desire, can they agree to play the games using Lackey and/or TTS?

Note: I am only asking about playing the game--I understand they would need to deck check and be able to chat using Zoom.

To be a sanctioned tournament, which means receiving prizes and promos, you HAVE to play with physical cards.  This has been established in the rules of "official" tournaments for a few years now, and Rob has stated the same for these tournaments in our conversations.  So unfortunately for the people who are used to playing with those programs, they are not allowed for these sanctioned tournaments.  That doesn't keep you from using them to play non-tournament games and build decks of course.

OK. I guess I was just confused by what the "physical cards" requirement was supposed to be. If you do a deck check by Zoom you can verify that the players have the physical cards in their deck list in their possession. I didn't realize that Cactus had any concern beyond that.

This is the main reason for a 1 and 1/2 deck check time.  The participants must show me their physical deck in the exact order of their deck list to verify the accuracy

If there's still time to join, I'll play tomorrow. I think Jayden planned to as well but I don't see his name on there.

What category?  I know Jayden mentioned it if we could use I/J starters.  I assumed he was since Gabe got it ruled that we could, just never heard back

So I have been looking for a phone mount that would work well in live streaming overhead (via facetime, zoom, etc) and the Arkon Pro Phone Stand that looks like it has a great way to show my territory from above. However, the other half of the puzzle is to have a way so that I can see my opponent's territory while playing. I would then have to basically adjust the overhead angle and have it close to my chest so that my opponent can kind of see my territory and then I can see my phone screen to see their territory.

To summarize, what do you do and what kind of accessories do you use to have a phone show your territory effectively while being able to still see your opponent's territory?

Thanks in advance!
