Local vs District?

I'm looking for people's opinions on why to host local tournaments or district tournaments. We're having our first district in a week and a half, and I plan to have another in June. Thanks!

If you only want to offer a select number of events or you want the event to be an invitational then you need to run a local. Other than that the difference is mainly the application cost.

We (meaning wild Bill and friends) tend to run one local for each district. If you don't have three or four regulars who want to play T2-2P (which you have to host at a district) or Sealed Deck which you can run in parallel with T1-2P then you may be better served having a couple of locals for every district.

Anyway, that is an opinion from the hosting side of things

why is T2-2P required at disticts?
Ironman 2016 and 2018 Winner.
3rd T1-2P 2018, 3rd T2-2P 2019

why is T2-2P required at disticts?
Apparently it is not required any longer. According to the Tournament Guide you simply need to host 4 events of host's choice. Heck, you can avoid T2 entirely up through the state level since a state tournament only needs to offer 5 events.

I dont understand how anything above a district should be allowed to NOT host all 7 categories.  It should be included in the price of the State. Pay X dollars and host ALL categories.  period.

I would say that we should only require 6. I don't think TEAMS was intended to be an "extra" category per se, but rather another possible option instead of T1-MP (or a different category of course, but in every tourney in MN it has replaced T1-MP). 6 categories is nice for a State or higher, because then there are three time slots with two categories each. Adding another event would either

a) force another time slot, which would usually be difficult for State's or Regionals
b) force a time slot to have three categories. This option isn't horrible, but some State tournies might not be big enough to have three separate events at one time.

I would tend to agree that it strikes me as strange that a state tournament might possibly feature no T2 events.

I know Chris is still running T1-MP down in Rochester, and I think the Austin groups still plays T1-MP. The main reason that I switched is because I feel like TEAMS is a better fit for the younger folk. Standard T1-2P deck have a much better chance of being competitive in TEAMS than they do against a highly tweaked super sleek monster freak T1-MP deck.

I would love to host a district but considering everyone’s situations in my playgroup, I can only host locals (and not that often).

Please see the front page of the tournament host application.  It reads:
New for the 2009/2010 Season, Hosts are only required to offer 4 categories of play at District Tournaments and 5 categories at State
and Regional Events. Type 1 - 2 Player & Type 2 - 2 Player must be offered at all District, State and Regional Tournaments. However, the
remaining catergories may be decided by the Host with the input of local players.

Registration fees are as follows:
- Local tournament: $20 for 1st category; $5 for each additional category.
- District tournament: $50 for 4 categories; $10 for each additional category.
- State tournament: $70 for 5 categories; $13 for each additional category.
- Regional tournament: $90 for 5 categories; $15 for each additional category.
- National tournament: $200 ( all 7 categories must be offered at the National Tournament).

Excellent, I knew I saw that somewhere which is why I included it initially. When I searched the Tournament Guide and couldn't find it, I thought I was misremembering from last year.
