A current look at the Manny Ramirez trade from the Red Sox perspective:

Red Sox get:

Jason Bay    .312 BA, 7 HR, 26 RBI

Dodgers get:

Manny Ramirez     50 game suspension

Pirates get:

Craig Hansen    5.86 ERA in 6 relief innings
Brandon Moss    .153 BA, 0 HR, 2 RBI

I like Jason Bay for so many reasons. He is a great clutch hitter, an above-average fielder, and he is a smart baserunner. He gives 100% every inning of every game.

I really don't miss Manny at all.

It's funny that way, I haven't seen a lot of teams cry over the loss of ManRam.  I was actually a little surprised the Dodgers bit on him, I figured he'd fade away to nothingness.  But I guess if Ricky Williams can still find work, so can Manny.

I think it is more fair to say that they knew they couldn't afford to keep Jason Bay. He is a free agent after this year. The Pirates would have lost him to free agency for sure since they can't afford to fight bidding wars with teams like the Red Sox. This way they got two young prospects (from the Red Sox; two more from the Dodgers) that are still locked under long-term contracts.

The system doesn't work for teams without money. I love my Red Sox, but I admit it is unfair to other teams that we can keep our top prospects (Youkilis, Pedroia, Lester) and sign the veterans (Lowell, Ortiz, Beckett) simply because we have more money.

If only the MLB could follow the model of the NFL and create a salary cap for its teams. This would create a more fan friendly system because all the teams would have a chance to be more competitive.

Just to update Jason Bay's numbers:   .323 BA, 9 HR, 32 RBI

For you Fantasy Baseball fans, make sure you have Bay active.  :o

With that said, I have to say that baseball may have a special repeat performance. Last year, Boston's Dustin Pedroia won the AL MVP the year after winning the Rookie of the Year. That may happen again with last year's RotY Evan Longoria of Tampa Bay. He is putting up MVP numbers already and he tears apart the Red Sox pitchers.

The problem is that MLB doesn't have anything approaching the equitable revenue sharing that they have in the NFL. So the big market teams have way more money to spend than teams like KC or Oakland.

I do hope that some day baseball will take on both a salary cap and some sort of revenue sharing program.  Although it is alot of fun to cheer on the teams that don't have big markets but yet still win year to year.

As for Manny its disapointing once again to see a player that tries to pull a stupid thing like this off with out ever thinking they would be caught. I'm glad he got caught.  I think the Dodgers will still be fine because their core group of young players still is amazing and has alot of all-star appearances in their future.
