For those that liked The Time Traveler's Wife, did you read the book/novel first?  We were discussing the two in class today and the professor was using it as an exception to the norm of people liking the movie better than the book, and theorizing why.

@xCaLeBx Im not pulling a Dr. Dobson, I'm pulling an Exodus 20.  I'm actually not as concerned that the movie has it, even though the Hayes Code admirer in me wishes to exclude it from film, but rather was annoyed that he was busting out the blasphemy on the boards.

<--Thinks how many movies he has seen in 2009...One...Transformers 2, my childhood was appeased and that was it. And that's not just due to my change of hobbies and habits. I haven't seen a movie since June and nothing really has appeared on my radar as interesting with the exception of Time Traveler's Wife and District 9...

this summer was epic i liked gi joe transformers harry potter there were alot of good films in 09 9 looks like a good film too

This is probably because The Hangover is rated R...plus, it's called The Hangover. :P

Ratings don't seem to be affecting some people's posts or favorites much.  There are at least 4 "Rs" mentioned.  I'm surprised Hangover hasn't been mentioned earlier either, but not because I've seen it or think it's a great movie, more along the fact that I think people like to mention how many Rs they've seen considering some of their ages.  One person even bragged about making it into an R illegally.

Before you blast me, think about this.
1)  I've seen too many movies that I shouldn't have seen for various reasons even though I am old enough.

2)  Though I struggle with it at times, I'm letting God's standards dictate what movies I see.

3)  This mostly applies to the Rs some PG-13s and I detest Harry Potter series.
and finally....
4)  What do you think Jesus' favorite movie was?

Why would I want to go see a movie that has so much cussing that it would fill up my whole response.

Hangover:
Over 70 f-words, including a handful used in sexual contexts and several combined with "mother." About two dozen s-words. And close to a dozen combined misuses of God's and Jesus' names. (God's name is coupled with "d--n.")

District 9:
More than 130 f-words, supplemented by close to a dozen s-words. "B--tard," "p---" and the British profanity "bloody" also are heard. God's name is abused twice; Jesus' once.

Yea, those sound like movies that I wouldn’t mind listening to for hours. :dunno:

I agree for the most part on The Hangover, for which the actual theme of the movie was profane, but the profanity in District 9 was just an accurate depiction of everyday life (and don't state the obvious on that, because I think you know what I mean). I'm okay with that for the most part, but I'll agree that the swearing in D9 was a little excessive in some parts.

To be honest, I'm quite offended by your response, since I know you're talking about me. I'm proud of the fact that I look and act much older than I really am, a teacher even told me it's because of my maturity compared to others my age. I didn't even know what the Hurtlocker was when I went to see it, my dad wanted to take me to a movie and he picked that one. He didn't know it was R, I didn't know it was R, so he just handed me some money while he parked the car and said to go buy the tickets. I didn't check the rating until after I was handed my ticket. So please, don't judge others because of your personal beliefs on certain matters. I am given the freedom to choose what I will watch, and I choose wisely, my parents trust me.

I swear, there are some people on the boards that I will never understand... You bring up point after point about how we are to follow in Jesus' footsteps (which we are, don't get me wrong), and yet you judge and condemn those whose beliefs disagree with yours. My theory is that everyone has the right to an opinion, do not judge them for they will be judged on judgement day by our Father.

First of all, who are you to condemn others for being sensitive? If you truly believe the Bible to be true, then whether you believe you can blaspheme or not, if a fellow brother/sister takes offense then you are not to do it (Romans 14:20-22).

But I take SK's side on this. Taking the Lord's name in vain is NEVER acceptable for a Christian to do. Do you not love God? Do you have no respect for Him? Why would you take His name in vain, especially if He specifically says we're not to do it (Exodus 20:7, Deuteronomy 5:11)?

What you watch is your own business. But please do not use offensive language on the boards (swearing, coarse language, taking God's name in vain, etc). Not only is it against board policy, but it's also not fitting for a believer in Christ (Ephesians 5:2-4).

What some view as "nitpicky", I believe is obedience.  God takes His name seriously, and expects us to as well.
Exodus 20:7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

What some view as legalism, I believe is holiness.  Would these rated R movies that are being talked about fit the following verse?
Philippians 4:8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

What some view as being judgemental, I believe is holding our Christian brothers accountable.  Jesus sure held people who claimed to have a good relationship with God accountable.

+1 with the adults on this thread.


However, I will make these points:

Life is rated R.

The Bible is rated R.

I will not encourage a brother or sister to go see a rated R movie.  But I will also not encourage them to NOT see a rated R movie.  Now before you get your knickers in a bunch, there is a reason.  I prefer to encourage the positive rather than discourage the negative.  Most people get more of the "don't do this" rather than the "do this".  They get reprimanded for doing the wrong thing, but seldom get rewarded for doing the right thing.

What if seeing a rated R movie is "better" than what the person experiences in their life?  Most of the world is not privy to our idyllic lifestyle here in America.

Bottom line: God gave us free will to make our own choices.  I encourage and hope you all choose to go make your own "movie" by living your life and letting other people watch.  But I will not judge you for your choices.   :)

Honestly, I meant no direct offense.  For that I apologize.  I may have even used the wrong word: "bragging"...again I apologize.  That is how I took it.  What I was trying to illustrate in my point was that someone thought "Hangover" because of it's R status was off limits and I was correcting them with counter points. 

If you like, then I will remove the sentence involving you, Lawfuldog, but I stand by the rest.  I was just trying to warn and keep accountable (like ProfU described) some of you other guys on the board.  Many of the movies listed are not healthy for our spiritual lives.  I don't mean to come across as judgemental but as helpful.  If I came off as judgemental then I apologize.  I will not however apologize for the wrongness of the movies some of you guys are listing as "great."

Well, as delightful as this conversation is, I would like to get back on topic by saying I just saw the movie 9. It met my expectations, which were low, but I would not recommend it unless you don't care much about plot and like animated action.

That's unfortunate.  I was somewhat looking forward to the movie.  I'll probably still Netflix it when it comes out on DVD.

The movie I really am amp for is Surrogates.  It looks like it'll be the same style as I Robot (with the first half mystery and the second part action).

Wow, 'God' is most certainly not His name. Taking his name 'in vain' means to do something in Yahweh's name with no purpose, making Him a mockery. It is not blasphemy. Blasphemy is an unforgivable crime against God that Yeshua was accused of when he presented himself of God's son.

And guys remember it's just a movie and people's opinions. Quit pointing out facts about a movie becuase you do not agree with it. I understand if the movie has more cussing in it then yeah you do not want to hear it, but going to look up how many times they say the word just to win an "argument" is a little anal. They could say a word a 1000 times, does that mean you will say it?

District 9 looks cool. I support anything done by the Peter Jackson though.

I liked Watchman the best, if I could just cut out one scene, it would have been on of my favorite movies ever. Though, Star Trek is a close second.

Doesn't Watchmen have a lot of sexual connotation?
