The only way I can think to pull it off is to use a good side battle card to cause King Rehoboam to fight another evil character. If you give Rehoboam to your opponent they would start a side battle between two Heroes for you, but then you don't get to choose the two Heroes. You'd have to find a way to manipulate it so that only the two Heroes you wanted were left in a territory and it didn't matter which one you control...

I'm not starting the side battle, my opponent controls it so they are using the ability. Each player can start one side battle. I started the 1st, they started the 2nd.

Question about side battles:

Can I start another one if I start another battle?

EX: I start a side battle and hten play grapes with the ability to attack again. Can I start another side battle in the second RA?

It's simple: one side battle per player per turn.

On a side note, there are a few ways you can get a hero fighting an EC in a side battle.

Convert Rehoboam, and quickly distract your opponent with a shiny TxP before he thinks to remind you that he'll lose his SA.

Gold Shield on Ittai. Make him Gold. Rescue with ET, play Unified Kingdom, band to Elishama and Tribal Elder, place Joseph's Brother Scheme on Ittai, and band to Ittai with Tribal Elder.
