Depends on what kind of deck you want to use. Most speed decks usaully include a small stand alone defense with characters such as KoT, Garrison, Uzzah etc. Philly defenses usually rely on using characters with big numbers backed up by negates, but can also be paired with sitelock pretty easily. Babylonian defenses usually require a few more cards to be effective, but can be very strong.

Gates of Jerusalem, Demons, Herods, and Babylonians (only if you're using Prophets) are the best defenses this year. Heretics are also very good, but require a lot of skill to play in T1.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Did I miss something? Polarius didn't include Greeks in his list? ;)

Greeks work well with either Demons or Heretics, but aren't really a defense on their own.

I've seen and used a lot of demons/magicians/Babylonians

I've also seen a lot of gray defenses, but all the grey defenses I've seen were dependent on capture or emperors, and I'm not a fan of either

the title of this thread is a steady defense and you asked the most used brigades.
in my humble opinion, turtle = steady and i would say that the turtle defenses are babs, assyrians, persians, egyptians (for deck discard only.)
philly and herod + COMBOCOMBODEMONS are other choices too.
