video of a sample game?
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:58:43 PM »

anyone know of a place where there is a video of a sample game?  I know that google search shows one on youtube, but the link is bad.  Would anyone consider doing a video for us newer players?  I have read the sample games from cactus, but it is not the same as watching one, especially for my 9 year old son.

Thanks,

greg

Youtube says the video was deleted by the user.  Here is a sample game in text:

Yeah, and now I can't find it. It was clever and fun, but not a good explanation.
Here's the best I have: (which is even worse, and is really only a teaser)

Maybe the week I have off between quarters I could do one?

That video is really hard to see what is going on.  Anyone else know of a place where a video of a sample game is posted, or if you have a video of a sample game you could send me, that would be great.

What all would you like to see in the video?

My brother has been bugging me to have us make a demo video, and now that summer's here perhaps we can.  Besides, we need something to introduce Nats09 attendees to California Style.

I think just showing basic and some advanced game play while explaining what you are doing would be great!!  Just keep in mind that you would be talking to beginners, so don't use abbreviations for cards, terms, etc.

What is California style?

Its a card game called "California Style". But californians have been known to call it "Redemption".

California Style is just the way that long time players at Bryon's Arcadia tournaments like to arrange their playing field:

Quote from: RedemptionCA.com
In a 2-player game, try this modification of the Recommended Card Arrangement:  Place your Heroes on the right side of your draw pile, and keep your Evil Characters on your left.  Keep your Lost Souls behind your Evil Characters and your Redeemed Souls behind your Heroes.  Notice that this arrangement puts your Heroes facing your opponent's Evil Characters, and your Evil Characters facing your opponent's Heroes.  On your turn, you will be using cards on your right side.  On your opponent's turn, you will be playing the cards on your left.  This arrangement makes it easier to remember which Evil Characters have been converted to Heroes, because they get moved to the right side of the draw pile.  This arrangement also has a scriptural basis: Jesus said he will put the sheep on His right and the goats on His left.  See the diagram of Card Arrangement: California Style.

By the way, looking for that image reminded me that Bryon has an animated demo of the game in a Flash movie:

Yeah it be great to have a video of a Sample Game ;D! Maybe You Should Have the Video follow the scripted game that way you could read and see it!(One problem would be finding all the Starter cards in one place.(But really does anyone have time to do it?))

Oh and this is a little off topic but are you required to put the cards in the specific order it states in the rulebook?
(Because if the Californians can mod the position can anyone else as long as the oppent(s) agree on the mod?)

I doubt the layout matters as long as all players are aware of it and can remember it :p

I actually have a huge problem with California Style. It's drastically different than the field setup outlined in the rules, and so unorthodox as to easily confuse the opponent. I'm going to start playing with my Lost Souls, Fortresses, and Male Evil Characters above my deck, my Fortresses, Female Evil Characters, Sites, and Discard Pile below my deck, and my Heroes, Artifacts, Captured Characters, and Set-aside area to the right.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Pfft, that's nothing. I keep all my cards, including my hand, on top of my deck.

Then I guess you should rant about RTS, too.  That card layout differs far more than CA style from the rulebook's layout.  California Style simply moves the heroes to the other side of the draw pile, and puts redeemed lost souls with the heroes (which makes knowing the alignment of the cards far more intuitive).  Although empty sites and the artifact pile are both shown to have moved in his diagram, laziness has returned them to the spots the rulebook shows.

Hey, let's take a poll: does anybody play with a card layout EXACTLY like the rulebook?  You move empty sites, stack both alignments of fortresses, have an artifact pile in your land of bondage, and set aside beneath the draw pile?

Nope
The two face down are my draw and discard.

While nobody plays EXACTLY like the rulebook says, most non-Californians play close enough where at a glance you can see where everything is, what everything is and what's going on.

as a new player, I really don't care where cards are placed as long as both players understand.  So in a video, I don't think it really matters where cards a placed.

I actually really love the idea behind Cali style, the reason it isn't pratical in most tournament situations is that it almost doubles the area needed (length wise) because the hero's and ec's are not stacked but spread, this makes it hard to use in large tournament with limited space.

I just used my new webcam to make a Redemption tutorial video. It was a half hour of recording, but I covered most of the bases.

I then played the video, and the audio and video weren't synchronized. Aaaagh. Oh well, 30 minutes is way too long anyways.
