This question has always remained in my mind. I still don't understand why anyone would like to get pounded with the ball and by other people. Could anyone explain this to me?

Because it appeals to some people just as screemo appeals to one person and then classical appeals to another.

Nobody likes getting pounded by other people. However, it is a lot of fun to do the hitting.

I like football because it is a mix of strategy, speed, skill, luck and will power. I played for 9 years (5th grade - freshman year of college) and enjoyed it a lot. One of the many reasons I played was because it was competitive. Every weekend you got to suit up and see if you were better than the guys across from you on the other team.

Testosterone. Males tend to be highly competitive and aggressive, thus making football appealing. I love playing football, but am just as happy playing soccer or any other sport. I guess I just like that activity, socialization and competitive nature of athletics. However, I am probably not your "normal" redemption player. I am 6'2", 200lbs and lift weights almost every day.

I'm 5'6 or 7 and 190 lbs.(In reoponse to Adoson) And I like football because it's fun and tackling people is injoyable.

It's the same reason most other developed nations like soccer so much.

Not in that they play the same - in fact, they do not - but just as the best athletes in Britain and Germany and wherever else grow up and play soccer, football is the stage for America's best athletes: the biggest and strongest and fastest. Other sports like baseball and basketball might argue for the quality of their athletes, and they would not be wrong, but of the major sports, football is king.

Interestingly, physics plays a large part in football. The force of two players hitting each other at full speed when in full pads seems to nullify the impact. It doesn't hurt nearly as much as it seems.

However, where football gets painful is when a 300 pound guy falls on your legs, or when the aforementioned impact occurs on the helmet. Those are difficult to recover from. But, statistically speaking, those represent the exceptions rather than the norm. (Unless, of course, you are playing the Steelers, or any team that has John Lynch.)

Football, hockey and the like also are tame war simulators, which appeals to testosterone and such.

For starters, because it's not a good sport. There is nothing compelling about spending two hours running around the "pitch" in pursuit of yet another 0-0 tie.

Because America decided there was no way they good be good at real football. So they gave up and tried something else, and it hasn't caught on to other nations for good reasons. But they're still trying.

Actually, the two sports are almost identical. The fans aren't exactly sober and non-violent, all you do is run it seems like, and the refs decide who wins the game.

The difference is points are scored in football, and you take advantage of your opposable thumbs like evolution intended.

The more puzzling question to me is this: why do men assume that women don't like football? Only I was expected to help mom prepare Sunday dinner while the "men" in our house got to watch the football game. It makes no sense to me.
