Converted Stick Figure

If Large tree is placed on an evil King, but that King is later converted, does Large Tree's second ability still apply? I don't know if "the King" has to imply "the evil King." I know there are plenty of evil place cards that work on heroes, so I just wondered if this would still work.

Large Tree
Type: Evil Enh. • Brigade: Crimson • Ability: None • Class: Territory • Special Ability: Place on your evil King to search deck for a Site. While this card remains, the King gains 1/1 per turn and cannot be ignored. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Daniel 4:22 • Availability: Thesaurus ex Preteritus booster packs ()

My wife is a hottie.

I would say the second ability still applies since it is not contingent on the first ability. The REG defines place as:

"When a special ability instructs a player to place a card on a second card, the placed card remains with the second card until the second card is discarded, returned to the draw pile or hand, or until the placed card is removed by a special ability."

Actually the words "while this card remains" means that it IS contingent on being placed by the first ability.  So one could make a case that "the king" obviously refers to the "evil king" in the first ability.  Therefore, the SA wouldn't work if the king was converted.

However, a technical reading of the card could lead you to assume that it WOULD work on a converted king, because that part of the special ability only has "king" in it.  I can see both sides on this one.

Personally, I don't think it will matter much considering that gaining 1/1 per turn and not being ignored isn't really that big a deal for heroes.  I also generally would prefer special abilities to work if they can.  Therefore, if I had to come down on one side of the fence I would say that the second sentence of Large Tree WOULD work on a converted king.  But I'm open to other interpretations if someone wants to make some :)

Well, it'd be a fun way to get around HHI, if you really need a banding king.

Hey,

If Large tree is placed on an evil King, but that King is later converted, does Large Tree's second ability still apply?

Yes.  The requirement that the king must be evil only applies to the placing of the card.  Once it's placed the ongoing effect only requires that it be a king; it does not require that the king remains evil.
