What does it take to become a Tournament Host?

Hey all,

As I am going to college in North Dakota, I will basically be stepping down from the game except nationals each year if I can make it. The only thing that would change this is if I with the help of others and God’s blessing a playgroup is founded up in Fargo. I am wondering what the qualifications and necessities of a tournament host is. What does it take to create a playgroup?

I greatly appreciate any help that can be offered!

Nathan,

All it takes to be a tournament host is someone who is willing and able to do it.  While sure it does take some understanding of the rules to make sure the people you play with are taught correctly, that is only part of it.  The hardest part is trying to find a place and people committed to it.  If you can do that everything else will fall in line.  So just go ahead and start praying and seeking opportunities to find a place/people to start showing people how to play the game.  Use I/J starters to introduce, then make "identifier" decks or the like to keep things very simple at first.  If someone wants to go hardcore and start playing in a super competitive nature that you are uncomfortable with, send them to us here on the boards.

The main thing is don't overthink it or make this more complicated than it has to be.  Find people that enjoy playing games and meeting others, and go from there.

Nathan,

If you get a group going just by teaching a few people and maybe doing informal game nights, then I would be more than willing to make the trip there to help you host a tournament at some point.

I would also encourage you not to put too much pressure on yourself to make anything happen right away--give yourself some time to adjust college life and simply look for opportunities to introduce people to the game.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

Godson, we have a link that might help you out as well. Just go for it. I know you can do it coz you are already a seasoned player with huge expertise and Nats wins in the very category that can teach the game to beginners with the use of starter decks.

And with Justin volunteering to travel, build it and he and the rest of the Redemption jedis nearby will come!

I also encourage globals to edit the OP on the topic below, if you see anything outdated. You have my blessings.
