A New ROOT setup suggestion

I know you guys meet and talk about ROOT stuff, so I thought maybe you could bring up this new setup idea and you guys can vote on it.

My suggestion:

Everything should be based on records and ditch the challenge and bonus games. Everyone plays two games per week. It would be required to have deadlines. The first Game must be completed by Wednesday at midnight and the second game must be played by Sunday at midnight. The 1-0's from week 1 game 1 face each other In W1G2 and the 0-1's of week 1 game 1 face each other in W1G2. So on and so forth. This setup should give a better idea of who actually won the tourny. Head to Head would be the first tie breaker. LS differental should be used to match up the "top" 1-0's "top" 0-1's, etc.

PLAYER J 2-4
PLAYER K 2-4
PLAYER L 0-6

Week 4 Game 1

PLAYER A 6-1
PLAYER B 5-2
PLAYER C 4-3
PLAYER D 4-3
PLAYER E 4-3
PLAYER F 4-3
PLAYER G 4-3
PLAYER H 3-4
PLAYER I 3-4
PLAYER J 2-5
PLAYER K 2-5
PLAYER L 1-6

Week 4 Game 2

PLAYER A 6-1 vs PLAYER B 5-2
PLAYER C 4-3 vs PLAYER D 4-3
PLAYER E 4-3 vs PLAYER F 4-3
PLAYER G 4-3 vs PLAYER H 3-4
PLAYER I 3-4  vs PLAYER J 2-5
PLAYER K 2-5 vs PLAYER L 1-6

PLAYER A 6-1 vs PLAYER B 5-2 for the championship
PLAYER C 4-3 vs PLAYER D 4-3 for 3rd Place
etc, etc, etc.

This sample will setup 6 final games and determine the final seeds:

1st and 2nd Place
3rd and 4th Place
5th and 6th Place
7th and 8th Place
9th and 10th Place
11th and 12th Place

If 2 players, in W4G2, are matched up end up with the same record and are even against each other in Head to Head, then LS differental is the final tie breaker. What do you guys think?

P.S. I just used the records after the games for the first 7 games to save some time. It would always be top records vs top records all the way down.

While ideally a better system, it's a logistical nightmare. People often have a hard enough time scheduling a game with a whole week, let alone 3 days, and the extra work the organizers would have to do to essentially set up 4 times as many matches would be a major headache. I don't think there's anything wrong with the current system. Last month, 1st and 2nd place were undefeated in Swiss and their Challenges, so I'd say the rankings reflect who really won.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

It's definitely an idea to consider, and it has been discussed in the past; the problem is that enough people have trouble with finding time for one official game each week, much less two with a midweek deadline. Also, since there is currently only one active administrator of the tournament, who happens to be a married graduate student, that would be way too much to keep up with. The current format is actually pretty good at determining an outright winner IMO. The winner for this month, Polarius, went undefeated in all of his official games, and played everyone else in the top eight at least once in an official game.

It would be great if a format like you suggest would work, but for now I think there are enough reasons that it won't.

Basically, what Pol just said.

Bonus games are worthless in my opinion. If you play them then you don't lose ground, if you don't play them you do though. Also, in the current format, you end up playing 4 games per week(5 if you lose your 1st bonus game). In this new format, you only play 2 games. Games would have to be posted on Monday morning and completed by Wednesday night. Then games would be posted on Thursday morning and have to be completed by Sunday night. It should actually take less time to setup the new games imo. You just update the records and LS differental and post 1v2, 3v4, etc. Not much thinking would go into it. I would also help out in the scheduling if it was needed.

p.s. I also understand there is no perfect setup, but I just believe this is a better system. If you all don't like it or don't want to do it, that's cool with me. Just thought I'd toss it out there.

p.s.s I think the biggest thing is if the players are going to go along with the Wednesday night deadline. If that is the only problem, I think a player vote would help to see if they want that or not. Right now you have to have your 3 games completed by Sunday night. In this format, you'd just have to finish 1 game by Wednesday night, and then you'd have the rest of the week to finish the other game like normal. We could use Thursday night instead as the deadline for the first game, post matchups on Friday morning, and give Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the last game since there's more time on the weekend to play.

The Wednesday deadline is the killer. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday tend to be very unavailable. Most of the official games I played the last two months were played on weekends, because that's when most people have the most time available.

Daniel,

Thank you for bringing up the idea, and for the outline. If we ever do move to such a format, that will be very helpful. As I said, it is definitely worth talking about, and having Swiss games a week has been discussed in the past, but it has always been decided that an extra deadline midweek would be a hassle for players and tournament admins. It's already enough of a headache to keep track of unreported games when I only have to send out PMs once a week about whether or not a game was played. Having to do that twice a week would be even more painful, and it would be really easy for me to get behind, even if I had help.

Perhaps someday, such a system could be implemented. But especially for now, with December being a busy month for everyone, I am keeping the format the same.

Thanks Daniel TSR for coming up with a good suggestion, and for putting the time into really thinking through it.  I also agree with Pol and the "other Prof" that implementing it at this point is probably not very possible.  But it is good to keep in mind for the future, just in case :)
