Best single color defense?

I'd like to get players' feedback on the most successful single color defense with the fewest number of cards.  I say fewest number of cards because I'm trying to shrink my deck from 63 cards to no more than 56 before our tournament at the end of the month.  These are my choices with the cards I currently have:

Gold Egyptians (I also have Emperor Claudius and Gold KOT, if needed)

Pale Green Assyrians (I also have Pale Green POTW, and other pale green demons, if needed)

Crimson Babylonians (I also have Gomer, Ann/Sapphira, Red Dragon and other crimson demons if needed)

Black Sadduccees (I usually also throw in Lot's Wife)

Grey Syrians (I usually throw in Nero and Lying Spirit? (the banding grey demon))

Orange Demons (And I do have Orange KOT and Orange POTW)

Brown Site-lockout (This has been mildly successful for me too, but certain decks do annoyingly well against it)

So I guess I'm wondering which one is the most "efficient", meaning strong with fewer ECs and EEs.  How many defensive cards should a 56 card deck have in it anyway?  Is 20 about right?

Don't be surprised if my next question is about the best single color offense :)  Thanks for the advice everyone.

If you're going for small...ness, then I would definitely use Brown (non-site-lockout), especially if you are willing to use a couple of Haman's Plots at a tourney. It has Complainers, Uzzah, King Zedekiah with Dungeon of Malchiah, King Nadab with King Jeroboam I (with which I would personally suggest Chemosh), The Jeering Youths, Korah's Rebellion, Gibeonite Trickery, etc.

you could use a pseudo lockout brown defense.

throw in like, one BBH and two babylons, taking naboths vineyard, and mabye wastelands. Then, have the rest of your defense be what bubbleboy described.

Brown can actually become very flexible if used right. I still rank it as the #1 defensive brigade.

*EDIT*

Thanks to this thread, I just rebuilt my nasty brown defense I had made a while ago.

You could do a pseudo-lockout defense with gold, too.

Pharaoh's Prison (blue) - also makes Potiphar banding & capture CBN, with his wife and even KoT
Egypt (gold) - also makes Enslaved by Egypt CBN
Banks of the Nile (green) - because it's cool

My wife is a hottie.

Brown is definitely one of the defenses I hate facing most. Zedekiah & Dungeon, Uzzah, and Haman's Plot are all "cheap" almost insta-wins, with very little you can do against it.

I actually dont use Hamans plot in mine. Its a bit cheap on RTS...

however, I have several other oddball combos that tend to catch people off guard.  ;D

Does Chemosh keep affecting the targeted character each time, so that I can choose a different character next turn and now it is "draining" 2 heroes at once?  I just thought it meant each turn I can drop a hero 0/2.

Each turn one Hero will drop 0/2. It does not continue to "drain".

You can reduce one Hero per turn.  For example:

1st turn I reduce King David by 0/2.

2nd turn I reduce Widow by 0/2.  (King David does not get reduced again since I targeted Widow this turn)

Does that help clarify?

I have to make an argument for crimson; it's the best, imo.  It doesn't seem like it at first glance, but crimson actually has some pretty good banding ability (gomer, ann/saph, fallen angel, etc.); it has served me quite well for some time now.  Aside from the banding, it has some good auto-blocks, like king zimri, red dragon, sapphira/deceit, etc. and the babylonians are quite strong, especially w/ the NERGALIZER!! Crimson has plenty of interrupts/negates and is very durable.  That's just my 2 :2cents: about it :)

I have to make an argument for crimson...

+1  Not only is crimson really strong but all those cards he's mentioning are common/uncommon so they're easy to aquire.  In addition to all those inexpensive cards crimson also has a couple nice ultra rares - Judas and Leviathan.  Neither are absolutely necessary to make a crimson defense but they will help if you have them.

Brown is one of the defenses I like to play the most.

Crimson is by far the defense I least like to play AGAINST.
