SW Regionals Recap!

I had the privilege of being able to attend Southwest Regionals this weekend thanks to the hospitality of Jonathan G. and his family. Though it was a smaller turnout, we had a great time and honestly between the 8 players (counting Bryon who didn't play but watched and checked out the new cards), 2 young kids and 1 very large dog, there wasn't much more room anyway.  :P

Michael and I played T2 2P, and I ended up winning thanks to an early Flood Survivor band. Once his defense started to set up, I avoided his strong Brown defense as long as I could (using things like Dove Returns, AotL and Obedience of Noah off of Jacob) before he finally defeated my Noah/Shem/Japeth band and sent them all to the Ark after an epic battle. Fortunately for me, he used up everything for that one block and I was able to get through for the final soul shortly after that. Unfortunately Michael had to leave for work and was not able to play the remaining events, but a big shout out to him for putting in the work to get the tournament on the schedule.

Jonathan, Ben, Scott and Kurt played T1 2P and Jonathan defeated Ben in a close match to take first. Meanwhile I spent some time with Bryon showing him the new set and was thrilled at how much he liked it since it was his vision so many years ago to have a sequence of expansions that started with The Early Church and ended with a Revelation set.

Next we paired up for TEAMS and I ended up pairing with Scott. I hadn't really made a TEAMS deck but seeing his AoG offense that he used for T1 2P, I decided to use a OT WC banding deck I had built since I had Israelite Archer that could band to his Heroes if needed. That didn't end up being necessary as we both made several great rescues and blocks on our way to beating the teams of Jonathan/Ben and Andrew/Kurt to take first.

After TEAMS, Kurt and Bryon had to head out, so the remaining five of us decided to do the crazy thing and play a 5 player T2 MP game. We gave ourselves some extra time as Jonathan had a couple interruptions to take care of father duties, but when all was said and done, we had a tie for first between Jonathan and Scott with 6 LS and a three way tie for third place between myself, Ben and Andrew with 4 LS.

Ben then had to head out, but what's a Redemption tournament without a good ol' Booster Draft? Even though it wasn't going to be an official category, we put together of draft of CoW, PC, TEC, Priests, Kings, Patriarchs and Apostles. It was another close multi-player game but in the end I couldn't stop both Andrew and Scott who were both at 4. I managed to block Andrew, but used my only battle winner to do so allowing Scott to get through with his Red United Army. I pulled a Saul/Paul with 4 ways to convert him (including a PC Holy Grail), but Andrew's Bereans took advantage of me not having Wall of Protection... :P

Overall had a great time, thank you again to Jonathan for hosting and Michael for organizing! Don't know the next time I'll be able to get to CA for a tournament, but I hope it does happen again!  8)

It was really awesome having you with us! I'd also like to share my experiences of the tournament too.

T1-2p
In the first round I played Scott Kramer. Scott ran an AoG deck beef up with some of the new ROJ cards like the humble soul, Seven Lampstands of Fire, and Child of Light. I won this game thanks to music leader and dull getting free triggers every time his AoG did some searching. I ran a martyr deck with Music leader and cloud of witnesses. One notable play I remember in this game was taking his Christian Soldier with a few armor pieces with Nicolatians teaching. Very rough. I think I attacked every turn with Woman with Child and wrapped up the game quickly 5-1.

My second and last game was against Ben Hogue. He ran a Bom deck with a couple interesting splashes. I had trouble in this game because i drew no defense for three turn so he walked in with captain for three quick rescues. Thankfully, there were plenty of souls to rescue for me as well I kept pace with him and I draw an early falling away to keep him at 2. Woman with Child helped me get my big two before he could and one last rescue wrapped up the game 5-2.

Teams:
I partner with Ben for teams and we played Justin and Scott. I played Martyrs again and Scott also played his AoG deck. I drew an awful hand with no ML or cards to search out Woman with Child so I tried to attack with Priest of Christ to see what I can do. Scott defends with King Cush something something with horses and immediately plays balaams disobedience. With no angel I couldn't get through so I played words of Christ to negate The Cush than played faith of Moses to D/C Justin's Ram horn so Scott's AoG offense doesn't get cbi armor pieces. Than I played overcome to d/c Justin's Priest of Zeus so Ben and I could draw. After that the game went down hill. Justin's Goliath repel Ben and I's attacks for the rest of the game because we could draw heroes or risk using heroes that would trigger multiple dull souls. I played SoG and We lost 5-1.

The Multi game was crazy. Andrew started with Covenant with Death and it stalled everyone. Lucky for me I was using Revelation angels so my Michael and Angelic Army wasn't harm. At one point my angelic Army had four rescues under their belt so I was feeling unstoppable. Ben however used falling away on me. Ben at one point had four rescues with Guardian up and it look like he was gonna win and he used hypocrisy to send heroes back to their hands. Justin one his turn use hypocrisy on his turn and because I was in between him and Ben he wait to use mayhem until Ben turn. Because I got to put my heroes down on my next turn which was also the last turn of the game I another successful rescue and better yet my draw three had SoG and Guardian in it to bring me to six to tie Scott.

Booster
I built a horrible deck and didn't even place in our unofficial draft. I did draft the flood and The old Noah hoping to use the combo but no success. Everyone else's deck was far superior however and because i didn't even draw souls it felt like I wasn't even really playing lol.

Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.

Yeah that was a tough draw for you in booster...it's always a bummer only playing one round of booster because sometimes you draft a great deck and you don't even get to use it... :-\

So glad it went well! I was pretty bummed that I couldn't make it out. I wish that I had picked my cards back up just a week or two earlier, as I absolutely would have made it out!

That's unlikely, but hopefully the Redemption group keeps growing in CA and I'll get back out there again in the next year or two.  8)
