Popularity of events?
« on: August 03, 2009, 10:28:12 AM »

My guess is that ignoring what events they would have to compete with at tournaments, the support for events currently would be in this order:

T1-2p
Booster
TEAMS
T2-2p
Sealed Deck
T1-mp
T2-mp

Does everyone agree that this is a fair analysis?

Hm. How can you properly analyze this without ignoring the events they have to compete with?

You also have to look at level of expertise...most players wont jump straight into T2, but I would rather play t2 multi over t1 multi any day of the week, yes I too am one of those who went to the dark side, but they had cookies! :P

I think this list is inaccurate because popularity must be gauged by what they play against, throw TEAMS up against Booster Draft and I bet it will be as "unpopular" as T1 MP.  I think the fact is Booster draft dwarfs any other type of play, no matter what it is.

The whole idea of this list is to gauge the popularity of the events individually.  Then we could discuss how they should best match up with each other at tournaments.

T1-2p
Booster
TEAMS
T2-2p
Sealed Deck
T1-mp
T2-mp
I disagree with this. T1 2 player is by far the most popular due to obvious reasons. Then it goes booster draft, no argument there. After this comes type 2 2 player. Teams is not as popular and here is why. 1-do you count by number of players or number of teams? 2- Some teammates are asked to play by someone else who would normally not play. 3- it is not used at tournaments, (yet) so it is hard to judge this category. Then I think it goes type 1 and 2 multi together with sealed right behind.

Sealed in the least popular IMO.
I would have also thought Sealed to be less popular, but the last two Nats have shown that Sealed and T2-2p are both about equally popular due to being head-to-head and having equal participants.  Of course it is possible that actually Sealed is less popular, but people played it simply because they didn't have enough cards for a T2 deck and therefore didn't really have a choice.

And as for TEAMS, I would count the number of players (about 50).  However, you could even count the number of TEAMS (about 25) and you get as many as participated in T2-2p this year.  I really think TEAMS is more popular than T2-2p.

I disagree. I would have preferred playing not Sealed the last few years, but I didn't have the resources to compete in a T2 setting, so I had too. I think many are like me.

If I remember right, there was approximately the same number of people playing Sealed and T2-2p at last years Nationals as well.  However, that includes people like Alex who would have rather played something else if there was another choice.

And if I remember right there were more people playing TEAMS last year than played T2-2p as well.  So it's not just a California thing.

I was about to post then realized you meant that the numbers of Sealed to t2-2p were similar which is true, not that last years were the same as this years...And I don't recall 50 players for the teams event, I thought it was 30...but i was too busy being nervous to count  :P

I'd switch T1 MP with Sealed and you're pretty close.
As a national champion, I support ReyZen deck pouches.

Sealed is "popular" because its a way more level playing field than T2 2P. T2 2P and T1 2P are typically paired against each other for locals, districts and often states and regionals. Ergo, most people (because T1 2P is the most popular) end up playing T1 2P throughout the tournament season. Since these people haven't been playing T2 at all and have not been tweaking and perfecting a deck, they know they don't have a very realistic shot at placing at Nationals. There are simply too many heavyweights with very refined decks in T2 2P so Sealed is obviously going to be more attractive since anyone can get a great pull of cards and do well in Sealed.

I don't think Sealed is more popular than any of the other current categories, as well as TEAMS. Most people who play it do so simply for the fact they feel they would do better in it than in the alternative category.

Actually there were about 50 players last year in the TEAMS event, but I can understand why you may have been a bit too distracted to notice :)

I'd switch T1 MP with Sealed and you're pretty close.
That's a tough one.  I would guess that T1-mp would be more popular than Sealed, but since it has always been up against Booster there is really no way to prove that.

I guess I'm one of the very few who play Sealed because I enjoy it more.  :-\

I also agree with Tim's list. Though Booster is by far my favorite event, and I don't like Type-1 2 player.  :P
