The Moon and Mars

So, there is a "wolf moon" out, with mars right next to it out tonight.... both of which are unusually close to the earth in their orbits. Mars is directly in opposition to the earth, meaning its on the opposite side of the earth compared to the sun. So, its about 4x brighter than normal if I recall correctly, while the moon is brighter and larger than normal as well. Unfortinately theres a thin layer of upper air fog (not full clouds cover) around where I live, but i still managed to get this composite shot of the two:

If it's clear outside where you live, go take a look, this doesn't happen often. I love astronomy.  ;D

Yeah, driving home from the theater tonight my mom and I noticed that it was unusually bright out, and I also noticed what looked like a strangely bright star near the moon, which I now understand is Mars.

It's a cool event. I love "astronomical" nights.

BTW, that picture looks really cool.

Yeah, it's two pictures combined in photoshop... since its impossible to see the details in the moon and mars at the same time in a photo... the moon is far too bright.

Wow, thanks for the tip!  I just went outside and saw that right over my head!

It was awesome!  It was so bright I felt like I'd better not stare at it too long for fear of retinal damage.   :D
