If this can't happen officially, does anyone know how to do it unofficially?

You could get someone who could use their computer as a server (or already has a server) and continually host a chatroom over telnet.  I'm sure there's more modern ways of doing this, I just like the archaic look of the black telnet window.
Epic pouting maneuver!

Everyone in a Hamachi group can chat together in one big group... would that do the trick?

I have created a room on meebo.com for Redemption Chat. Anyone with an account on a popular chat service (AIM, Microsoft, Yahoo, Google Chat, etc) can log in there.  Then look up this room:

Name: Fun and Fellowship

Even if you don't have IM you can chat by going to the homepage of Redemption VA

Or try this

Enjoy!

Only 16 players at a time can be in one Hamachi group.  Also, chat there is only 2-person.

I've made the chatroom public, because it wouldn't come up in the search otherwise.

Enjoy!

you can chat with the entire group at once, too.  Right-click on the group name rather than the user's name.

Cool, that's good to know.  A meebo room can hold up to 80 people at once.

Please note the updated chatroom name and that it can be accessed via the web without using im or the meebo site

Hey guys:  I have a Hamachi network that can serve the same purpose.  It has been around a while and is a place just to talk.  It has openings!

name: Redemption Spam

It's definately worth trying meebo.  It syncs directly to your AIM info and has a far better UI.  Plus, it's completely web based, making it both cross-platform and install-free.  (Plus, more than 16 can chat at the same time, and it won't intrude on you if you are on RTS thru Hamachi).
