And "Beam me up Scotty" was never said either...  yet SO MANY people remember these quotes the exact same way; I wonder why.

-*Going to be adding favorite quotes to this post as I think of them*-

"You eying my piece fiddy cent? You wanna go?" -Transformers I

"How do you dial 9-1-1?" (Meanwhile, there is a fire station across the street) - Little Rascals re-make (Buckwheat)

"You boys gonna pull them pistols or are you gonna whistle Dixie?" (Said to Yankee soldiers) -Clint Eastwood

"Say hello to my little friend!!!" -ScarFace

"Get down before I put you down" -SWAT 4? or just SWAT? I don't remember...

"Names Barf.  I'm a Mog; half man, half dog.  I'm my own best friend." -Spaceballs

Just like in the Treasures of Sierra Madre they don't say, "We don't need no stinking badges."  In fact, it's something along the lines of "Badges? Who needs those?"

yet SO MANY people remember these quotes the exact same way; I wonder why.
I often find myself trying to relate a funny quote to a friend or family member, and in so doing I once in a while botch the words up a bit. However, if the friend has not actually seen what I am describing, or does not remember it, but we both like it anyway, we form a fond but incorrect memory of it the way I describe it, and get used to quoting it that certain way. That friend may then proceed to do the same with another friend, and he with another friend, etc., until it spreads enough that the majority of people remember the quote incorrectly. I can imagine this same general process might be catalysed by a movie review from a popular magazine, for example.

So, that's my theory. :)

Interesting.  I wonder if it's been researched.

And "Play it again, Sam" was never spoken in Casablanca.
And "Elementary, my dear Watson." was never written in a Sherlock Holmes story.

"Elementary, my dear Watson" was a quote from the early Sherlock Holmes movies.

i am surprised nobody has said, "Luke, I am your father"
                                                               -Darth Vader
(star wars 5: the empire strikes back)
                                                   [no copyright infringement intended]
Only a true fan (I'm not a true fan, just being nerdy/sarcastic) would know that line doesn't exist... However, there is a similar line where Darth Vader says, "I did not kill your father, I am your father!!"  Thank you.

Just like in the Treasures of Sierra Madre they don't say, "We don't need no stinking badges."  In fact, it's something along the lines of "Badges? Who needs those?"

Star Wars "No Luke, I am your Father!"

Actually the line is "No, I am your father" ;)

"the iron man suit! is it my birthday?"

"Iron Maiden?  EXCELLENT!"

"42"

"Late, as in the Late DentAuthurDent"

Newton Crosby: Where are you from, anyway?
Ben Jabituya: Bakersfield, originally.
Newton Crosby: No, I mean your ancestors.
Ben Jabituya: Oh, them. Pittsburgh.

Number 5: Hey Laserlips. Your mama was a snowblower

"Shiny"

Book: "I brought you some supper but if you'd prefer a lecture, I've a few very catchy ones prepped...sin and hellfire... one has lepers."

Mal: "Well they tell you: never hit a man with a closed fist. But it is, on occasion, hilarious."

There's much more

Wash: Yes, yes. This is a fertile land and we will thrive. We will rule over this land and we will call it......This land.

Mal: We can't die. Do you know why? Because we are so VERY pretty.

Wash: Leaf on the wind! LEAF ON THE WIND!
Spoiler (hover to show)

Book: This should do. *pulls out a rifle*
Zoe: Preacher? Doesn't the bible have pretty specific things to say about killing?
Book: Quite specific, it is however, fuzzy on the subject of kneecaps.

Mal: Do you want to run this ship?
Jayne: YES!
Mal: ..... Well you can't

I wish I could post more but Firefly isn't exactly PG

Ahaha, I had no idea what Firefly was until we watched the episode with the quote about sin and hellfire in English class. So entertaining. I need to find more episodes.

Best English Teacher EVER!

This same teacher gives us extra credit for writing 'Shakspearean' insults on our quote quizzes from The Taming of the Shrew.

Back on topic:

"VoilĂ ! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."

I apologize if this was posted already; I couldn't remember if someone put it up or not. But it's by far one of the best quotes ever!! :D

Jayne:

"Sure would be nice if we had some gernades right now, don't ya think?"

"Ten percent of nuthin' is...let me do the math here...nuthin' into nuthin'...carry the nuthin'..."

Mal:

"And Kaylee, what the hell's goin' on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?"

i could go on for days.....

others i can think of fast:

Zombie: Send more Cops!!!
Zombie: Send more Paramedics!!!

:c. I got in trouble for using the term "crack-hemp". That term is actually used as an insult in The Taming of the Shrew...

Ewan McGregor (The Men Who Stare at Goats): "What's a Jedi Knight?"

The sad part is that this quote pretty much sums up the entire movie's comical approach. The only thing more comical would have been Liam Neeson playing the character portrayed by George Clooney.

Well, that wasn't the only source of comedy in the movie. I found the last LSD scene quite amusing. (BTW, am I allowed to say that?)

Wash: "This landing is gonna get pretty interesting."
Mal: "Define interesting."
Wash: "Oh [no] oh [no] we're all gonna die?"
Mal (over intercom): "This is the captain. We have a...little problem with our engine sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then...explode."

Operative: "That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship. She is an albatross, Captain."
Mal: "Way I remember it, albatross was a ship's good luck, 'til some idiot killed it." (to Inara) "Yes, I've read a poem, try not to faint."

Wash:  "Hey, I've been in a firefight before! Well, I was in a fire." (beat) "Actually, I was fired from a fry-cook opportunity."

Mal: "Well, my days of taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

"The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!"

River: "Jayne is a girl's name."

River: (trying to eat an 'ice-planet') "My food is problematic."

Wash: "Little River just gets more colorful by the moment. What'll she do next?"
Zoe: "Either blow us all up or rub soup in our hair. It's a toss-up."
Wash: "I hope she does the soup thing. It's always a hoot, and we don't all die from it."

Wash: "That sounds like something out of science fiction."
Zoe:  "We live in a space ship, dear."

Gimli: He was already dead!
Legolas: He was twitching.
Gimli: He was twitching because he's got mah axe embedded in his nervous system!
