Being someone who played Red/Blue, I would like to say that being oldskool doesn't make something better. The Pokemon meta now is the best it's ever been.

I played them as well. They are bland because the lacked interesting choices. With the large movepool of today, Pokemon playthorughs always have interesting choices.
