RDT Nationals Report 2021

Hello all,

Nationals 2021 was my 15th nationals in a row, and very special for that reason. I had a fantastic time hanging out with old friends, making new ones, competing and fellowshipping. I hope to see you all again in 2022, wherever it might be.

Day 1: T1MP, Booster, T2MP (Head Judge)

Thursday is traditionally the day that I judge each year - I enjoy seeing the crazy decks that people draft, and seeing how well we've done with our set design. I think LoC draft is amazing, and hope that everyone enjoys playing it as much as I enjoy judging it. T2MP was much calmer this year (maybe 3 person tables is the answer here) T1MP on the other hand! Talk about a death glare when I called time on Turn 2 with 30 min still left on the clock! That's what happens when you have 5 players playing I guess. The next 4 rounds after that went faster, but still had some inevitable time outs. Jeremy is a very deserving champion, and his deck worked amazing in two games.

Day 2: T12P (4th Place)

Friday was very interesting - Leading up to the tournament the big question was "What to play" Combo, which I knew could do well, Counter, which I thought had a chance, or a "Real" deck if enough people were playing the other two to balance out. At one point I had all 3 ready to go. I ultimately decided after losing to Josh on Thursday night that Counter had a better than coin flip chance so I checked that and a copy of Follower LaFS. I played the following deck list for all 7 rounds:

Day 3: Teams (1st Place with Jayden Alstad)

Going into the last day I was really hoping to come out with a win. Teams is all about finding the best player in the room and asking to partner with them. Jayden was definitely that player this year. He went undefeated all three days and came home with a suitcase full of plaques! We bounced around a few different deck ideas before settling on a something similar to what I played in T1, but with a slightly different offensive plan (Hidden Treasures instead of Throne) and a different color defense (Black has a similar combo to Rezin-Captain of the Chariots) to take advantage of Overwhelmed since we expected to see a good amount of Purple. My list below was the "Defensive" deck running evil dominants and the counter soul package. I wish I would have ran this offense on Thursday, it was amazing and virtually unstoppable with the multiple opportunities to force CtB with Elijah.

Deck Size: 50

Lost Souls: 7

Escape
Dull
Oppressed
Humble
Awake
Forsaken

Treacherous Land
Babel

Heroes: 11

Paul
Mighty Men
Samuel (CoW)
Jeremiah Hope Bringer
Ishmaiah, the Gibeonite

Joshua, the Conqueror

Good Enhancements: 7

Faith

Evil Characters: 9

The Deceiver
Abimelech, King of Gerar
Philistine Armor Bearer (PoC)

Those weren't death stares. At the T1MP table. They were confusion stares. We first thought you were going a little crazy. Then we realized why the call.
