Record Store Day

Yay another thread that will be mostly me talking to myself!

For those of you who don't know what record store day is, it's the day once a year (April 21st this year) when bands put out exclusive vinyl releases that are only sold at local participating record stores. It was mostly thought up to counter the move towards the big box retailers (Walmart, Target, etc.) and to keep local record shops alive. You can find the complete list of releases here. You will have to google your nearest record store though. Personally I'll be picking up Taking Back Sunday's "We Play Songs" live LP, Anberlin's "Never Take Friendship Personal" and "Blueprints for the Black Market" and Fun.'s "The Ghost that You Are To Me" for sure and hopefully get Straylight Run's Self titled but Victory is shipping them at Random and there is no guarantee any copies will end up anywhere near me. Anyone else even care about this? Anything you'll be picking up?

I now understand why you think Bob Dylan is a good singer...

Vinyl has a much better sound quality than MP3s but if you're not a collector or an audiophile the work involved with this holiday just isn't for you mostly. It's hard enough just finding a record store in general now-a-days none the less one that participates and carries the pressings you want.

I'm not listening to you. Really, you called Cake terrible? And Bob Dylan, of course. And Streetlight Manifesto, of course. And who is Clearwater Creedence Revival? L.

The 5, FTR, were Flogging Molly (<333), Metallica, Gorillaz, Taking Back Sunday, and Disturbed.

How do you feel about Streetlight boycotting themselves? I think it's a cool move but it is quite controversial.

Definitely cool to see a band fighting back against evil labels. I don't torrent music - even though they've actually suggested it - so I everything I have is purchased. That being said, I already have everything, so this doesn't really effect me.

I'm hoping to go to one of their concerts, but we'll have to see.

I also forgot to mention the Beatles. Ring Wraith doesn't like or listen to the Beatles.

When will these be available for download?

When someone rips them from the vinyl. Legally? Only the ones on the second to last list will be. The point of the holiday is that it's Vinyl only (except for one band that decided to release a CD. guess they missed the memo). Most of these releases will be exclusively released on vinyl, with no downloads or CDs. But I'm sure it won't be too long before someone puts them up after ripping them from the records, say a day or two. Some of them may also come with MP3 download cards and those will get out.

I'm planning on picking up Arcade Fire's The Sprawl II, nothing else has really grabbed my attention this year.

The album is already on vinyl. Hoping this one has remixes on it or something.

i dont think you understand the concept of limited pressing. Brand New's Your Favorite Weapon has been repressed 4 times, each one contains exactly the same tracks but the most plentiful pressing is 400 copies. they are all rare and each has different value. The first pressing was a run of 100 white and 400 blue, the 100 white go for hundreds of dollars each on ebay even though the most recent pressing is still available at retail price some places. These aren't like cds where every pressing is the same and has the same value.

I think it's a sad trend that vinyl is slowly dying. I don't have the will to start collecting, since to have an even modestly respectable collection would cost thousands and thousands of dollars, but I've always admired those who do, and if I ever do decide to collect something, it will most certainly be vinyl. I'll try to pick up the Arcade Fire record because I do have a record player at home though.

Vinyl has actually been on the upswing for the past couple years as people have found more appeal in the physical medium and also realized CDs are next to worthless. It's never going to be the "in" thing again but I expect most major releases, especially independent releases, to be pressed at least once.

A band I used to play in had their first album on vinyl.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Most of my favorite bands have all of their albums pressed at least once, still waiting for Taking Back Sunday to press their new album though.

The problem with doing vinyl is that it's not economically viable unless you're already huge. Every band ever can manufacture 1,000 professional CD's, but to do Vinyls it is so cost prohibitive and niche that you just shouldn't do it if you don't want to lose money.

most bands restrict their first runs to 250 or so, The Graduate did 100 of their first EP, and then 350 total (75 180 gram black, 100 clear red splatter, 125 red&black swirl, and 150 translucent red) for their first full length, and 357 (57 Opaque white with black and gray splatter, 125 Forrest Green and black Marble and 175 Cerulean blue)

Happy Record Store Day everyone! Already picked up a test pressing and red&black splatter copy of The Graduate's Annhendonia from American Dream Records for 20% off, and am currently camping shop radio cast for the moment they put the straylight run LP on sale.

Yes I now its now a triple post but I thought this was definitely worth it, the following promo codes will get you the advertised amounts off at the Hot Topic online store which has a surprisingly good selection of vinyl. I just got 8 records for $55 with tax and shipping included in that. Less than $7 a record. Not bad if you ask me.

$15 off $30 Code: HTCASH15
$30 off $60 Code: HTCASH30
$45 off $90 Code: HTCASH45
$60 off $120 Code: HTCASH60
$75 off $150 Code: HTCASH75
