Top Cut! Episode 1 - Appetizer Phase

Welcome  Welcome  Welcome

To ...

Top Cut!

[NARRATOR WITH THE AWESOME BOOMING VOICE]

The invitations have been sent, the judges are in place, and the contestants are finally arriving!  Let's meet our competitors!

     Nameless!
     yirgogo!
     KoalaKingoFA!
     jbeers285!
     AJ!
     spacy32!
     Red!
     RTSmaniac!
     Red Dragon Thorn!

They take their places in specially-designed Top Cut! Deck Construction Centers, where they will find:
- Ample space to work.
- A computer with access to the Cactus Message Boards, the Redemption Wiki, the REG, the Rulebook, and with RTS installed.
- The TOP SECRET TOP CUT! STORAGE SYSTEM™.  The TSTC!SS™ is a complex, robotic filing system which can pull any of the cards provided for the contestant with a simple search.

And on the cards provided, each contestant will have their TSTC!SS™ stocked as follows for the duration of the competition:

- Two (2) of every version of every card ever printed.
- The supply WILL NOT be restocked between phases.  Contestants will have to ration those cards across all three decks, if they make it that far in the...TOP CUT!

They will use these cards to participate in three phases of competition, where they will create one deck each to compete against each other and prove their prowess.  Each phase, they will be given a basket of cards to include in the deck, which will be sampled by our judges.  Many will be asked to leave...but the Top Cut! will remain to compete, until one is left!

Let us meet the judges!

     ReeeeeeeeeeeeDOUBTER! *cheers!*

Known by many for refusing to abandon his Type 2 tendencies in Type 1, Redoubter has failed many times in tournaments for sticking too closely to his name, insisting on including far too much defense in his decks.  He also enjoys long walks on the beach and playing Redemption by moonlight so that his opponent does not see him cheating!

     Drrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrek! *cheers?*

Known by many for having a weird number of 'r's in his name and the phrase "Well, to be fair," Drrek is a big part of the community who likes to build decks.  Even if he is not as cool as his brother, this judge has a lot of great feedback coming for our competitors!

     browarod! *cheeeer!*

Dora Worb loves to play Redemption and is a big participant in debating rules and rulings.  He is still wondering what he is doing here, since we promised him cake and there isn't one in sight, but who cares!

Each of our judges will rate every deck* on:

1.   Taste – The overall power of the deck, and how useful it is in actual play.
2.   Presentation – Efficient design and cohesiveness of all parts of the deck.
3.   Creativity – How well the ingredients for the phase are incorporated, how central they are made, and how effectively they are used.

*All opinions, criticism, personal attacks, and terrible attempts at humor from the judges do not represent the panel as a whole, nor Cactus, nor the Redemption community, and should not be taken seriously in any case.  The judges and panel take no responsibility for needing to actually be correct or to rate decks in a way that makes sense to normal people.  You have been warned.

Contestants will have until midnight on Sunday April 13, 2014 to submit a legal Type 1 deck with all of this in mind.  Then, the judges will determine who is going home...and which 4 have made the Top Cut! for the next phase!  Those who remain will then be asked to create a Dinner Deck, where only 2 will make the Top Cut! for the final Dessert phase...where our winner will be crowned!

But let's not get ahead of ourselves, first they have to clear the first phase.  And here comes the Appetizer basket, including one copy of each card they are expected to use in their deck!

Convincing Miracle
King Amaziah
Chorazin
Gates of Jerusalem

The befuddled competitors are looking at the basket with a mixture of confusion and disgust, but they have no time for that!

CONTESTANTS!

On your mark...

Set...

BUILD!

To the audience: Please do not help the competitors, and enjoy the show! ;)

Oh, that is going to be an interesting challenge for our competitors guys...I don't think those cards work well together at all!

I'm glad to see some defensive cards in there for once, these producers like offense WAY too much for my tastes.  Drrek and browarod, I think this one will be the start of a GREAT contest, and I can't wait to watch these guys run around frantically to build these decks out of this!

HAHAHAHAHA!

Creative juices are flowing I am worried that defenses can really only be cohesive in one direction. I'm thinking offenses will be the difference maker here int h appetizer round!

Does this include doubles, so for instance, could we have the 2 differant types of Son of Gods, as a total of 4, or does this only mean 2 Son of Gods total?

Stuck at 57 and trying to get down trying to decide if 56 is the right move or this deck or if it should cut down.

Dude

Submissions are supposed to Pm'd to limit idea stealing.

They are supposed to come with an explanation of the deck and why you made the choices you did.

If you threw it together tired then tweak it and make it better. You have till Sunday night.

[SUPER AWESOME ANNOUNCER VOICEOVEEEEEEER!]

As the contestants get underway, we see much muttering and anger, many of the competitors talking to themselves out loud in the hopes of working out a perfect deck.

Meanwhile, one of the group starts talking very loudly at his station...giving away secret plans to his opponents!

Out of no where, Alex 'The Moderatinator' Olijar TACKLES our young entrant!  Whether it is to stop him from giving up too much, or he feels it was all a clever ruse being used to distract the rest of the field, we may never know, but we DO know now is why the producers felt so strongly about the extra security!

What an opening round already!

Hey Mr. The Moderatinator, he's not hurt is he?  We can't afford a lawsuit on the PILOT for crying out loud!

*shows up late, hair disheveled and clothes amok*

Okay so where's the cake? *silence in the auditorium* Oh c'mon, SOMEBODY has to have some cake....unless the cake was a lie.

Geez, I almost get run over by a bus on my way here, thankfully I'm Still Alive, and there isn't even actually any cake.

*slouches into judge chair with a sour look*

Why did you use 2 defensive protect cards? You can only use one or the other well. If you use both, you get a convoluted defense.

[SLIGHTLY CONCERNED ANNOUNCER VOICE]

In a very sudden and unrelated turn of events, The Moderatinator has been disavowed by Top Cut!, and a press release that was totally prepared a whole lot earlier...like, before alleged assaults and stuff...says that he is a loose cannon who doesn't play by the rules.

...and this just in, he is being sued!  Good thing he isn't with the show anymore...

Update on case : Alex Olijar has reportedly pleaded guilty and will pay all doctors bills. His Psychologist has cleared him for TopCut and it is up to the owners to decide if he will be back on the show. This is W4GYZ News. Stay tuned for more details.

Interview while cooking.

Being that I am known more for my playing ability then my deck building I am excited to try and show my value as a builder.  As I say this I sit here realizing my first dish is ending up bigger then I would want my appetizer portion to be. 56 cards is heavy for an appetizer and I assume most of my competitors will finish with a 50 card deck.

The only real reason I am ok with 56 is because the head judge is a t2/defensive heavy player and a few extra defensive cards seems like it could be to his liking.

Color commentary on interview.

A ninja competitor would design a 49 card deck to which he would then add Pot O'Manna. The use of only 49 legitimate cards--emphasizing the lightness expected of an appetizer--would score highly in Taste. Adding Pot O'Manna strictly for the legality would max out bonus points in Presentation as this is the best, most efficient use possible for Pot O' Manna in *any* deck.

Back to the show.

If you are looking for a champion, look no further. I am here! RTSmaniac is ready. (cards shuffling through the air from one hand to the other)

Convincing Miracle
King Amaziah
Chorazin
Gates of Jerusalem

What a basket! Alot to work with here. I look foward to using these ingredients in this appetizer round.

Hey jbeers! What are you gonna do with that Chorazin?

Hey jbeers! What are you gonna do with that Chorazin?

Same thing as you as I assume there is really only one viable defense combining  these cards.

Side Camera Interview
I keep saying this to get my opponents to take the easy road with there defenses because my is very different and very cool.  It might even see tournament play!
