"Are You the Guy With That Mill Deck?"
« on: August 04, 2019, 01:07:26 PM »
+5
This was the deck I've been working on all season and I had a blast with it. I was hoping to get into Top Cut with it but I had so much fun at the tournament so that feels like a win to me.

Edit: Felt the new title was more appropriate

Doms:
Son of God
The Second Coming
Three Woes
Angel of the Lord
Shipwreck  - I cut Martyr for Shipwreck for all those pesky Storehouses with Storehouse typically being the only deck protection I saw in the meta.
Mayhem - with so many TC enhancements, it was common for my hand to go down to zero so this helped with speed and consistency
Falling Away (Wo) - Didn't see anyone run Guardian and with this deck trying to stall, I felt it was a good fit. But I could see using the new one for rescues with Elijah

Lost Souls:
Lawless - Speed
Hunter - get to remnant, exiles, or deck discard
Exiles - Amazing card, usually grabbed Cov of Moses for a D3 or given over to Egypt if I didn't have it yet
Remnant - One of the last additions to the deck. Help me get Pharoah's Daughter for a EC and Hero or just steal other people's stuff. Amazing card
Deck Discard - older versions of the deck had more sites and I would go whole games without getting Egypt so i might cut for Distressed or vindicated soul
Wanderer - had it in here for crowd souls but never saw them.
Hopper - Put hopper in to make the deck smaller but now I would cut it so I don't make the opponent go first lol
Darkness - Speed

Utility:
Covenant of Prayer - if storehouse came late or was negated/discard I used it to grab whatever I needed at the time
Hidden Treasures - I loved using both sides of the ability but used mainly for the Exodus for auto rescues
Samaritan Water Jar - This card always got my opponent to less than ten card in deck and usually caught a dom or two they couldn't use most the game. I thought about adding "Today" to discard an evil dom I happened to set aside that I don't want them getting back
Burial Shroud - Helped me to stall the game to keep the mill going
Egypt - amazingly versatile card. Grabs storehouse, pithom, or any defense
Storehouse - One of the best cards printed this year. The games I lost is when my opponents shut storehouse down on me usually
Pithom - deck discard and a great underdeck ability that most people forget about. Usually a sneaky way to get rid of storehouse

Heroes:
Jonah - added pressure to opponents choices
The Thankful Leper - Used for water jar and a great hero when the opponent's deck is gone
Moses' Parents - protected my Exodus and cloud heroes including the new amazing Elijah
Habakkuk - another mill and a good pair with Jonah
Hur (PoC) - great banded to moses for some mill that cannot be cascade negated
Moses, Friend of God - One of my favorite new heroes. Would mulligan my entire first hand to get more souls to go first
Miriam - Amazing lowkey hero as she is protected from discard and can play exodus with hidden treasures for auto rescue
Samuel (CoW) - my only answer to CWD and other nasty curses.

Good Enhancements:
Plague of Darkness - CBN on moses and thankful leper plus can be used for the whole offense
The Exodus - The staple card of the deck. usually got me two rescues a game when recurred with The Coming Prince
Out of Egypt - Another mill card plus grabs watchful servant when i'm ready for him
Plague of Blood - Steals enhancements from opponents deck plus discards evil. Stole mourn and weeps with it and even Scapegoats.
Tested by Fire - Boss enhancement on Elijah and pretty good on everyone else too
Delivered - Mill plus I used it to activate burial shroud in my discard phase to block opponent from attacking and I can turn it off on my turn to attack again.

Evil Characters:
Egyptian Magicians - Used the magicians for their brigades and nationalities.
Jambres (FoM)
Jannes (FoM)
Scapegoat - stall the game to mill
Cursed Egyptians -grabs given over to egypt from reserve
Foreign Wives - My best blocker and can use mayhem for an auto block and is Egyptian
The Amalekites Slave - My budget deciever that is also Egyptian
The Outcasts - Great card for pressure and Milling.

Evil Enhancements:
Sun Worship - Probably the best mill card in the deck and can be made cbp with Pharaoh's kid
Mourn and Weep - Stall the game. Better used in battle
Turn to Egypt - TC discard top 2
Abandonment - my scattered
Balaam's Prophecy - can steal star cards from opponent's deck including mourn and weep plus I can stack the deck to target a card I want to mill
Beheaded - mill card or get rid of a pesky male hero

The Reserve:
I am Creator - almost never used it surprisingly as I'm not in a hurry to get certain heroes as other offenses would be, might cut for an Exodus EE for Jannes
Fire Foxes - grabbed with storehouse and great chump
Elijah - The best hero in the last set
Watchful Servant - duh
The Coming Prince - topdecks a good star card from discard, usually the Exodus for another auto rescue
Covenant with Moses - D3
Given over to Egypt - Mill on every turn and can go on pithom
Plunder and Pillage - a new treasures of war that can also steal artifacts and enhancement from opponents discard pile. Great card when paired with a mill because I usually had a lot of options to choose from
Pharaoh's Daughter - Amazing hero to grab with Remnant soul. I used her to get a D2 0r D3 with cov of Moses or if I needed an EC for TC enhancements
Invoking Terror- Amazing on the magicians for constant use.

Feel free to post any questions and I'm happy to answer

Record 13-1

First Game – Jay Chambers (5-4) Win
Got a first turn water jar off and set aside his three woes and I’m pretty sure that’s how I won. Got my all my stalls off plus two exodus rescues for the win.

Second Game- Sergei Creech (5-4) Win
Sergei was very enthusiastic that I was playing a mill deck and it was a very fun game. I once again got all my stalls off and my two exodus rescues for the win

Third Game – Sam Tierce (5-4) Win
Sam and I played at regionals and I used a different version of this mill to beat him there. This match up however was much more difficult as he switched to a Daniel deck with Foretelling Angel and Storehouse. Despite these counters, I manage to stall until I could counter both foretelling and storehouse for a very close win.

Fourth Game – Justin Alstad (2-5) Lose
Justin ran a 57 card deck plus he had much more intimate knowledge of the deck then any other player as I play tested ideas for this deck with him. Despite that however, I manage to discard his Son of God with a star card in the opening draw of the game. I thought this might give me the advantage to win but Justin’s defense was impossible for me to get through and he handed me my first lose.

Fifth Game – Charles Loria (2-3) Lose
Charles had every counter to my deck I could think of including storehouse, CoW Jacob, and even wall of protection to shut down my Elijah. I could never get the mill effectively going but we both ran Egyptians for defense, so I manage to keep him on his toes. I never drew the exodus so I couldn’t get my cheese rescues.

Sixth Game – Dario Vilanova (5-1) Win
This game was probably the best mill I had the whole season. I discarded his Son of God, second coming, and his falling away and I’m pretty sure he didn’t have a deck by the third or fourth turn. Got my two exodus rescues for a very satisfying victory.

Seventh Game - Josh Potratz (3-5) Lose
I had to face Josh last year to get into Top Cut and this year was no different. Josh is an excellent player and countered all my stalling and discarded my hidden treasure to stop my exodus rescues. He very much deserved the victory here and stop me from going to Top Cut again.

I want to thank the TN play group for getting this deck to where it was and especially Chris Fachman and Justin Alstad for letting me borrow cards to make this deck possible. It was a great tournament and I hope to see everyone again next year!

I am too blind - don't get it. How do Necromancer and delivered work together effectivly for several turns?

Regarding the Mill: Why not use Exodus Egyptians for more milling? And maybe even turn them into Exodus Heroes with Grail?

I found that the classic discard defense was too easily countered and my mill would get undone. I tried to incorporate as many deck discard options that my opponent couldn’t easily undue which is why I leaned more on milling in the prep phase rather than the battle phase.

I won our game 5-2, but still an excellent game... honestly one of reasons I felt 57 was legit was because I knew a legit Mill deck was possible and I wanted to have enough resources in the event I lost some key cards.

What does Mill mean exactly?  Discarding a card from opponents deck?

Also, the deck seems really cool and I bet really fun to play.

Yeah, Mill is short for deck discarding

RDT was saying that because in three different games throughout the tournament, two of which being the final two games, he discarded his opponent's Falling Away either with the Star on Delivered or Necromancer's ability.

Love a mill deck, and this is a very good one.

Off hand these are the cards I think would have been great with this deck:

- Sheol (keep the game stalled even more, and all of your ECs that would sit in territory share gold)
- Divination (a one-two punch when used with Balaam’s Prophecy)
- A second Samaritan, in Reserve or main deck, in the event you have SWJ but don’t have out The Thankful Leper
- The Emmaus Road (to get out The Exodus or any of your other Star Enhancements quicker)
- Manna (a D1 and a mill, particularly would be used best with BP or Divination). Maybe even have Offeing Your Son to keep getting this art out.

Sheol would be a great addition--just keep underdecking the deck discard LS for added value.  8)

I love Divination, but having that and BP might be too many "off-brigade" EE--I think it would be best to stick with one or the other.

I think 1 Samaritan is fine--sometimes just hitting 3 with SWJ is great because it takes longer for the cards to come back.

Emmaus Road would be a great addition as well.

Manna all day.  8)

Oh, and for added measure, add in Ashtaroth Worship, Sing and Praise, and/or Reverence and Awe to banish all or virtually of the discarded cards. Now that’s nasty. 😳

Even swapping out SoG for CoF would be strong so as not to rely on your opponent having souls out.

I definitely slept on Sheol this season. That deck discard option Guardian mentioned would be amazing. The new deck cut hopper for Manna. I used to use Divination but I cut it for the exact reasons the Guardian explained. I did want to use asharoth worship so badly!! Both options on it are great because discarding their TC negates always help this deck out and I agree, Emmaus Road should find a way in here. Thanks for the advice.

I built it at lunch time and switched out a couple of cards. I’ll test it out later against my son, who’s apparently a better player than me and also has a better deck since he made 2nd place. 😆

Some soul action I thought be sick would be to use the Site Remover with a couple of sites in deck. Have Imitate out and keep copying Site Remover to keep putting the Deck Discard soul into one of the Sites (one of which could be Raamses to get a double mill). 👍

Sheol + deck discard souls + Raamses and even treacherous lands sounds terrifying... which means I need to make a t2 version of this deck  ;D

So I played my son last night with a modified version and this is what I noticed.

- Manna is a must have, particularly if you are using The Coming Prince to topdeck The Exodus first, then activate Manna to draw The Exodus.
- Offering Your Son is a must have. It gets out Manna, HT, or any other OT art from deck, AND, if you put Scapegoat in the reserve you can get either that or Firefoxes.
- Sheol is a must have. It works better obviously if there are less souls out on your side, but if the souls keep coming back you get more value out of them again (such as Exiles, etc).
- The offense needs more power, mainly battle-winners and/or interrupts, and the defense could use some interrupts.
- Although I didn’t use Divination and only BP, I feel Divination would be a better choice. I’ll playtest first to verify.
- I think these cards would be great add-ins: Failed Objective, Swift Horses (D), First Fruits, Feast of Booths, Wonders Forgotten (this would be a great one to have instead of Ashtaroth Worship, and it’s a battle-winner), Two Bears, WwC (to get out your good doms quickly).

And to add, it was A LOT of fun to play. It’s a brutal design, so good job Jonathan on its design.

Thanks. I gotta give credit to The Guardian for initially get me on the path but it was a conversion with Tyler (Mr.Hiatus) where I realized I could run mourn and weep, scapegoat, and burial shroud to both keep my opponent in check and get me enough turns to mill the deck and use Watchful Servant and The Exodus effectively and quickly.
