My vote right now is for Starcraft, but it's as much a sentimental favorite as anything; I have played a number of very excellent board games which I would not hesitate to recommend.

Go.

I wish I knew more people who played, though. Despite its simple rules, it's difficult to pick up on the strategy when you learn it, so most of the people whom I've taught are reluctant to continue playing.

Most abstract strategy games work that way.  The problem with teaching someone a game like that which you have already mastered is that they have very little chance of ever winning for a loooooong time.  That probably makes them reluctant to continue playing.

My suggestion would be to pick up a new abstract strategy game (like Twixt or Blokus) and actually learn the game with some of your friends.  That way all of you will be pretty even and they'll have more of a chance to win.  This will probably lead to them playing the game with you more.

I have the same struggle with teaching people Redemption, I'm good, they're new.
One thing that I recently did was to build decks of varying degrees of difficulty (1-5).  When I teach people the game, I start by playing a homemade starter deck with them which makes our decks equal.  As they begin to advance in their skill and increase the power of their deck, I play against them with my leveled decks.  When they beat a deck, then they advance to the next one.  That way I am always playing a deck that is only slightly better than theirs and it makes an attainable goal.

Man... I don't think I've beaten you in forever.... If that's your LV 1 deck then I need to practice more.... I'll never beat your 5... maybe I should get a deck-list from you - Do you mind if I play it at nationals?

Rail Baron rocks my socks! Also Monopoly, Settlers of Canaan, Journeys of Paul, basically anything that someone will play with me. I love all types of games!
