Title: The Old Republic
Post by: SomeKittens on November 14, 2011, 10:31:06 AM
I got into the beta last weekend, and it was a blast.  Unfortunately, I had to sign a NDA to play, so I can't talk about details.  However, it was awesome.  What I can say is that I was a smuggler known as "MalcolmReynolds."  Anyone excited for this?  (It also comes out on my birthday, hinthint)

I am beyond excited for this. I've had my preorder set for months, I'm an officer in a guild that's all set up with a council, officers, and members and is going to be auto-loaded into the game by Bioware once they get that far, and I get to play in the next beta weekend so that should be awesome.

I'd be happy to play with anyone that wants to group up and I'll have at least one character each on a Republic server and an Empire server.

A huge portion of what I loved about it was that it was Star Wars.  The opening videos (you can find them on YouTube) made me feel like I was back in the theater.  It's an epic battle between good and evil.

I've it on Pre-Order as well. I'm so going for the Sith Inquisitor(Sorcerer).

Not if my guild has anything to say about it. ;)

*watches Star Wars again*

Nope, we still win in the end.

I can't wait for the old republic, I got into the beta last weekend and that was awesome (even though I couldn't play for the first two and a half hours of it because of the entirely stupid way that servers were chosen and queues worked).  I preordered, but I wasn't an early preorder so I'll probably get rather late early access.  Still its going to be awesome, and I can't wait for the beta test weekend where they are letting everyone in.

If the 5.0 preview isn't enough of a compelling reason to get out of WoW while you can, then I don't know what is. No end boss (so less of a sense of progression towards something), pandas as a race (seriously?...........seriously? ??? ), they're changing the talent system AGAIN and making it utter crap (the Cata update wasn't terrible, but this is just ugh), probably other stuff that I'm forgetting.... Blizzard is just continuing to show their true colors of being nothing but money-hungry jerks.

As a side note, is anyone on here going to be in the big beta test coming up later in the month?  Its available to everyone who signed up for testing before 11/11/11.

5.0 looks awesome. Pandaren have been part of the lore since WCIII, and frankly they're overdue. I love the way they're overhauling the talent system; it will be more like it was in vanilla (options, rather than a set build that everyone has with maybe 1 or 2 points of deviation). I also love that there's no big bad, it will feel more like Vanilla where it's just being in Azeroth rather than a big rah rah about something or other. The pet battling system will probably be fun, and before someone says "WoW is just going to be Pokemans!" cool, I like Pokemon. I also love that it looks like you won't be able to fly at the start of the new areas like in WotLK.

Basically, I like everything I've seen about 5.0 and it will take more than vague hints and "oh yeah, it's star wars" to convert me B)

@Kittens: It says "upcoming beta weekend" and I got it on last Friday. It also says "Additional details for this upcoming test will be announced soon." so I assume it wasn't the one this past weekend.

I love how everyone, even Blizzard, is under this mistaken impression. There will ALWAYS be a "best spec". There are people who have no other purpose in life than to sit there doing calculations and tests with their complicated spreadsheets figuring out which talent increases their dps/hps by 0.0000001 points. No matter how many options you give or take away, whether the list is 6 choices long or 41, there will always be "best" choices. Cata's system didn't change that, this system won't change that. Why do people not realize this?

Take Polymorph. Say you had the option to talent into making Polymorph either not regenerate, not break from DoT's, or wander toward caster, instead of a talent you either take or don't take to not break from DoT's, then different Mages would do different things with their Polymorph depending on which of the 3 options they took.

From what I've seen, that's what the talent system is going to be like.
Title: Re: The Old Republic
Post by: browarod on November 15, 2011, 04:55:39 PM
And someone would come along and decide that, based on heroic dungeon and raid encounters, Talent <whatever> is the best of those three. Then, any Mage going into a heroic dungeon or raid will be expected to have that talent. Scorn and blame to follow if they don't have it and the group wipes.

I'm not saying it's a good system (it stinks, actually) but that's how it works, and changing the number/nature of choices is never going to fix that (unless the "nature" of the talents is purely cosmetic or non-combat related, in which case what's the point in having them at all since then everyone really would be cookie cutter?).

No, they announced on the official site that they are doing a major stress test later this month, the exact date of which has not been announced, and they are inviting everyone who signed up for testing before 11/11/11.

Same here, Sith Sorcerer, Imperial Agent (gentlemen), and Trooper were all played. I must say, (I don't think this falls under NDA) the choices in the game are amazing.

Man I wish that I had known that people on here were in the last beta test, I didn't get in groups very often because I'm always afraid I'll mess stuff up for people I don't know, and it would have been fun to be in groups more often.

Is anyone planning on participating in the large beta test later this month?  I know I will regardless of the date, and my brother will as long as its not on Thanksgiving weekend.

pick whichever one has the stupidest name possible.  Do NOT pick any server with an appealing name.  Doing that lost me 2 and a half hours of game time last beta test weekend.

I get to start playing at 10am on Friday. :D

I work til midnight the night before, but you can bet I'll be up in time to start playing as soon as they let me in, haha.

If anyone wants to group up or whatever, I'll be playing on the Cosmic Turbine server with my guildies that have been in the full beta for awhile. I think I'll be playing Republic for the beta so as not to spoil the Empire quests for the full game.

I can join you to group up.  Are we allowed on the regular beta servers though?  The fact that they are telling existing testers that new servers will show up and that those will only be available for the weekend makes me wonder if weekend beta testers are allowed on the regular beta servers.

I work in a data center, so most of our job is sitting there in case something breaks so we can report it straight away. If nothing breaks, then our job consists of hourly walkthroughs of the server rooms and then whatever we want to do in between. It's a great job. :P

So, I'm curious if we have enough people playing one faction or the other (or both, even) that we could make a Redemption guild or something. It would be fun to be able to group up for stuff with you guys and having a guild would make it easier than trying to coordinate everyone having everyone else on their friends list.

Does this sound like something people would be interested in, or should I just stick to my other non-Redemption guild? lol

I'd join the guild.  I'm planning on playing both sides, and I do admit I liked the Empire storylines a lot better in the beta testing, but I'm still going to play trooper first, and probably bounty hunter second.  There's a good chance I could get brother (Redoubter on this forum) to join as well.  I think he was planning on playing trooper first as well but I don't know

I honestly won't be picking the game up until about marchish after release but I will play either side.

I love the smuggler for the republic, as well as the Jedi Knight (I'm not big on tanks but they really made it fun)
And for Empire I like the Sith inquisitor. I didn't get to beta the empire too much (Only Agent and Inquisitor and It took me too long to realize heroics shouldn't be soloed.... (Did one of the three...but ow...)).

If you guys make a guild. I will join when I get the game.

Did anybody see the article in Citizen magazine about Star Wars going gay?  It said that The Old Republic game will include "same gender relationship arcs".  Here's a little section of the article.

The way it works is that players will have certain "companions"--not other players, but characters built into the game.  When (say) your son Johnny is playing, "companions" may ask him whether he wants a gay relationship.
This wasn't originally in the game:  In fact, though it goes online Dec. 20, the homosexual aspect won't be in effect till later.  A couple of years ago, the game's maker said the terms "gay" and "lesbian" don't exist in Star Wars, bringing complaints from gay activists ever since.  Now they've changhed course, citing strong demand from "fans".

Does anybody know if this is true?
Title: Re: The Old Republic
Post by: browarod on December 08, 2011, 06:20:20 PM
Honestly, I'm not surprised. Knights of the Old Republic 1 (also made by Bioware) had a possible party member who was lesbian (if you go dark side and kill her, you later run into her lover who also fell to the dark side and you have to fight her as well). Homosexuality is increasingly becoming something media creators feel the need to cater to (comics have been including more homosexual characters in the last decade or so), or at least not shy away from, in order to not alienate the sub-culture.

I'm not saying that I agree with it, just that I'm not surprised considering the direction American society is heading.

It is very true, Bioware has been moving ever more towards this in their games, from Juhani in Kotor 1, to the Asari in Mass Effects 1 (and all the mass effect games), to Kelly in Mass Effect 2 (though it wasn't a full romance option like the other ones were), and now they've confirmed homosexual romance options in Mass Effect 3 as well.  I've also heard that Dragon Age has these romances as well, but I have no experience with that game.

It seems every time Bioware releases a game now, it goes further and further in this direction, something that saddens me, as Bioware has been one of my favorite, if not my overall favorite, game company.  I will say, I have never pursued these options in their games, and I do not plan to in the future, and I would encourage others to avoid these options if you get these games as well.

Dragon Age has two bisexual characters. You can romance both Leliana and Zevran playing as either sex. They have a pretty graphic scene devoted to each (imo). It's certainly not like Kelly were its only implied.

So does Fable and, well, pretty much any RPG in recent years that has a romance element. Is it gross? Yes. Will it stop me from playing the game? I'm not sure if I am supposed to be more offended by girls kissing girls or dragonslayers kicking orphans, so I'm going to go with "I don't play much in the way of video games."

PG (okay, maybe PG13) movies could get away with that same level of content, and with better graphics.

Anyways, this is a Bioware game, and is to be expected. I'm more surprised they felt the need to add romance options to an MMO.

I do like that Bioware is trying to make an MMO with a legitimate story. One of the main reasons I want this game instead of one of the many other MMO games is because it is going to have an actual story with decisions and conversations.

I agree, but compatatively to other video game romances, it was really explicit.

Well I'll be playing Republic first with my trooper, but other than that I kind of like all the sith counterparts over the republic ones.  I'll probably actually play a bounty hunter at the same time as my trooper, because I'm planning on playing the trooper through with my brother for the most part.

I wish I had known the way they were doing early access earlier, because I would have pre-ordered as soon as it was available if I had. sigh.

Haha, that's exactly what we thought when we first saw the name. :P
I wonder if it's a homage.  I'd be surprised if it was.

My brother is playing on as Republic on one of the servers now, I'll ask him which one, but if no one objects, we could all play our republic characters on that server (whenever we actually get the coveted e-mail that is)

That sounds like a great idea. I'll probably be rolling a Jedi Knight (since I have my two favorite classes on my Empire server).

that sounds good, he's playing a Counselor right now, and I'm going to be a trooper, so we'll at least be able to make a party of all classes except Smuggler.

I'll be making a Jedi Knight named Gnorlin there. Once I finish the starting zone I'll see about making a guild (unless you guys already have one).

We do not.  I have a Trooper named Drrek on there, and my brother has a Counselor named Redoubtress (He says he could not make a male miraluka after seeing a female miraluka for all that time in Kotor II)

I am, I already posted I have Republic characters on the Juyo server and Sith characters on the Grand Master Zym server, if people are still interested we should form a republic redemption guild on the Juyo server.

I was busy over the holidays, but I will try and get my Knight to level 10 and make a guild at the fleet asap. Do we have a preference for the name? Here's some ideas I thought of:
Redemption (Club)
Redemption CCG (Club)
Knights of Redemption
Soul Savers
Guardians of Your Souls

from those my vote would be Guardians of Your Souls, but it should be up to a vote with all the founding members.

I'm not at all going to be in this (due to not having the game), but these were the coolest 2 names of your choices.

That being said, I think the 2nd one could be considered arrogant by other players outside of your guild.

Just throwing in that I'll be up for joining/helping once we decide what to do with the guild.

I had also thought it would be fun to have a Sith guild named Orange Brigade, since they're irredeemable and all, but no one would get it outside the play group ;)

Is it bad that I'm trying to contribute in the forming of a Christian guild, and the two characters I've spent the most time on that would be in it are Neutral and Darkside?  I find it ironic if nothing else.

Can you have Republic and Empire Players in the same guild?
My Main Character is a Sith Sorcerer in the Juyo Server.
I Will Join Whatever Guild You Guys Create that My Sorcerer Can Join.
PM Me If/When It is Created.
and Yes it is a Bit Ironic., But much so if you think about it.
Sith=/=Evil and Jedi=/=Good
and then There is your Light/Dark Spectrum think about (I'm Going For Light Side Sith, althugh most of the time it ticks off Khem who usually wants to eat the people I spare)

Yes, Khem does love to eat people, lol. I'm not doing very well at leveling my Knight fast, but I'm working on it. Have to put in sufficient face-time on my Empire characters and the guild that I'm officer in, so that doesn't leave much time for other TOR'ing.

So, I've got all 8 characters off their starting worlds, and working on getting ships for them all.  All my sith are on Zym, and all my republic on Juyo (for now).

If no one objects, I can set up an SMF forum for everyone who plays TOR here, so that we can get better organized without cluttering up this forum.  Once we figure out a name, at least.

Sooooo are we starting this guild or not?  Also if anyone would like to, me and my brother have a couple of characters on grand master zym we want to play the game through with others, I'm a healer and he's a tank, and our dps friend dropped out on us.  So we are looking for someone else (or two if multiple people want to join) who could go through the game with us with those characters.

Yes, I know, holy epic necropost.
Just curious if there ever was a guild made (though this thread makes it seem there wasn't) and if there was any interest/possibility of one. Currently the game is free up to level 15 and in November it will be free all the way to 50, so there will soon be a large influx of new players (including possibly some from these boards). A redemption guild on one of the newer, more lightly populated servers may be a good idea.
