Title: The (un)offical KOTOR 1 and 2 Discussion, Tips, and whatever Thread
Post by: Alex_Olijar on July 27, 2008, 08:59:33 PM
Yeah, I know this thread has happened before, but, hey, it's on like page 14. So oh well.

Let's all talk about and enjoy one of the best RPGs to come out in awhile. It's got the great customization, you know you want it. What do you guys usually do with your characters? Light or Dark?

Me, I'm a Dark guy, only because I want my cheap force lightning. I'm slightly hesitant to go Dark in 2 though, since I turn ugly and gray skinned. It annoys me.

Personally, I have the most success with a skills based character. What about you?

When I play through Light side I grab all the buffs to thier max level but the first thing I max is force speed/dominate mind (master speed). I also use 2 handed fighting to allow me to weild 2 swords without penalty. Then, I add all my buffs and run through slicing and dicing. I put my points mostly into dex and grab lightsaber/melee finess to allow me to use guns untill I gain my lightsaber. (For Kotor 2 Go Jedi weapons master)

Dark side: I Grab force lightning and all other dark kill skills. Spam int/wis. Use crystals that boost force damage. Then sit back and enjoy the ride (For kotor 2 go sith lord)

One time I did Soldier/Consular.  One of my favorite builds ever.

Because I started as Soldier, I beefed up STR and DEX and CHA, I got all the armor options immediately, I didn't have to upgrade Persuade as much when it's more expensive, and over the course of the game, wound up with a higher (base) vitality total than any possible combination of scout or scoundrel with consular.  When I became a Jedi, I was able to upgrade Persuade cheaper than I would have as a Soldier, I upgraded WIS throughout the game in order to have more Force power later, and finished with more (base) Force Points than any possible Guardian or Sentinel build.

It was not much different than the average Scout/Sentinel build, but with more armor options in the beginning, Force Focus and more Force points in the end.  Which came in really handy with my rockin' Dark Side powers available to the Consular.  I missed out on Force Storm and Death Field because I did an 8/12 build, but Force Lightning and Drain Life combined with my superior Force abilities meant I was ripping people up in the endgame, both with mad lightsaber skills and tons of Force points.  I also used Drain Life on the Jedi in Malak's lair to heal myself and prevent him from healing himself, then ripped him up with Force powers.  :D

I did that last trick myself. Force storm X 2-3 then drain life to regain any health I was missing. Rinse wash repeat. When all bodies were gone I finished it up with master flurry +master speed with my 2 blades that makes for 6 hits per attack.

You used Flurry? I don't like Flurry, I find Critical Strike or Power Attack to be much better. Flurry misses way too much. Power attack is good for crowd clearing, and Critical Strike is much better for Bosses, seeing as it doesn't penalize the hit rate.

My best build thus far was in KOTOR 2, a 15/15 build, as usual, Light-side Jedi Sentinel/Watchman. She was ridiculously skilled. Can you say, like, 8 skill points on my first level up of the game. It was awesome. I spent the game using her stealth prowess and Watchmen bonuses to eliminate enemies in one quick killing stroke, before they knew where I was.

Have you ever gone with a ranged main character? My Watchman made me consider it, since her high intelligence bonus gives stun bonus to Critical Shot. I ended up using Ranged weaponry for most of the game, but I pulled out a lightsaber for the end game. Still, makes me wonder if I could go all the way with a ranged character.

Flurry only misses once most of the time at with master level flurry+alot of dexterity. Which still means 4 hits at master, 5 hits with master speed.

O yeah I did the sith assassin/sentinel build that was fun. But on that final stage with everyone in there was a pain due to not being able to restealth without running off.

I wonder too...Might be fun to try some time.

Yeah, I'm not sure. I'm going to be at the beach for a week without my normal LIVE connection, so I'm thinking about building a ranged character during the nights.

btw if you have a character with 18 dex but only 10 strength the dex bonus with help with your saber skills (the chance you have for hitting) instead of getting a +0 bonus to hitting with your strength. Note that the dex bouns does not help in damage so if you had like 16 dex and 14 strength that would be a good balance between chance and damage.

He's really supposed to be a melee in both, but in the first one, he doesn't have restrictive armor so he can be ranged.

A Kotor>Kotor2 for difficulty
B I know this is a necropost BUT this is adding info.
I did this, but no cha, I did str(16)/con(16)/int(???) (skill poinnntsss) was helariously fun. I was a tank (Casuss fett's fully upgraded armor /-15 to all damage cept energy (Yay energy shields) and 15 defense. I went light side doing this due to lack of armor on my last character on kotor (dark side force lightning abuse) was so horrible.

Crit strike I don't like since most my weapons are low crit range but high damage output. I do say power attack (I used that skill with the above) is awesome.

Recently all I have played is kotor so I have alot of new insights for the game.

I learned about skill management switching back to kotor 1. In kotor2 you got alot more skills so you didn't have to worry about not grabbing toughness to get more HP. So my first guy had great force powers but was a squishy he died very easily.

My next one was a light side soldier/couns build. As Schaef said it was fun being a walking tank.

My next one was a light side persuasion build. Scoundrel/Guardian. Very fun to do alot of things that you normally couldn't with an insane amount of persuade.

My one (I am currently on) is going to be a duel wielding pistol user/darkside/scoundrel/pursaude/sentinel. Been VERY hard so far with no melee abilities. No light sabers, just guns. I am planning on getting master rapid shot with master speed to shoot 5 times per round.

Anyone know what good a scout is?

I've only had that happen ONCE, and that was when I took the money in the Sandral/Matale quest. Besides that :D evil is fun. Force persuade+Evil=Fun.

Ah, I see. What are the class skills for them? Maybe I should make one.... But what combo to do with it...

Update on my blaster build, it works like a dream. The 5 shots a round combined with force kill to immobilize my target so sneak attack grants me an extra 4-24 damage per shot really works well (Can kill a young rancor with kill+one master rapid shot with master speed on). I took down malak on our first encounters in 2 rounds+one force push so I could use master speed. I plan to do one more experiment, can you reject the dark if you are pure dark, and get back down to pure dark by the final fight. After this time through the game (Its like my 6th now) I am gonna go to kotor 2 to experiment with builds in its system. Level 20 cap ftl :(

Hm, I wonder if you wanted to, could you do a 18 con 18 str build soldier/guardian. You wouldn't be able to do anything BESIDES combat, but you also wouldn't have any issue slicing through anything in your way with a double bladed lightsaber, heavy armor, and heal(kotor1).

I'm up at 18 Con/18 STR, Gaurdian(Padawan).  Over 120 Vitality so far...dual weild maxed out with Prototype Viroblade(Upgraded)/Blue Saber.  He's ownage.  I'm upping on Persuade atm, since it's cheaper.  I got Force Lightning for my first powerz az teh padawanz.

With some heavy range support(Carth/the kid) or a partner to tank with(Big Z), the party is awesome.  I took the first Dark Jedi on with Bastila/my Soldier build/the droid you need to get in with and owned, taking like 30 damage total...shock is amazing for starting out.

After this, I'm making a female dark jedi scoundrel...should be funnn :D

I've gone through a game with 0 persuade. Can't smooth talk anyone but hey, you can start alot more fights. I had my tank build maxing out threat injury.

Lol enjoy the fun with carth

Update on my experimenting with the game.
Anyone who knows me knows I love to push the limits of ANY game.
Notes I have discovered that I have note already stated (Major spoilers)

You can pretty much go neutral(Pure) by going pure (light/dark) and then choosing  the opposite alignment choice (Dark jedi go light, light jedi go dark) when you confront Bastilla.

If you go light with the above technique, you can get to 75% dark by the end of the Malak fight. So you are an evil dark jedi who saved the republic, go figure, I sound like the emperor.

If you go light with enough persuade you can get Bastila to love you, even if you've done NOTHING but be insanely cruel to her. I even told her I got her tortured for FUN. I still convinced her to love me. I am just such a lovable person.

Finally found Darth Revan's/Star Forge Robes. Best robes in the game. Cost ALOT of computer spikes. Location is on the star forge, second level first hallway(with the turrets) to the left. Using sith mask+D.Revan's robes you almost look exactly like the Revan in the cut scenes.

Blasters can work vs the whole game with ALOT of success. Only thing you need to do is the following. Always have a melee tank in your party. Canderous was with me ALL game. Get master speed+best robes you can. Get master rapid shot. Get best guns (Mandalorian heavy blaster+Cassus Fett's blaster(fully upgraded) and spam the rapid shot after you have master speed. For the Final Malak fight you NEED to shoot him down to recovering the first time ONLY. Then run around and either force drain/Destroy droid the rest of the bodies. (My build was 16 Dex 16 int Rest con.)

On Manaan when you find the whimpering locker you can still use the command "Stab with lightsaber" (Come out or Ill blast my way in, come out or i'll carve you into fish snacks, Insert lightsaber) while holding blasters, you will NOT draw a light saber and he will still die. (Dark side points)

Very fun the 5th time through. I don't know of anything else to experiment with in this game so I will be trying to abuse Kotor2 next. I will keep notes on this thread as I go along.
