Title: Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds (NOT BATTLEFRONT)
Post by: TheKarazyvicePresidentRR on January 11, 2009, 08:12:48 PM
Is an RTS (real time simulator) based in episodes 4-6 and episode 1 from star wars. If you ever wanted to command the battle in one of those epic battles, it fufills your wish. It is very good. I'm a big fan of RTS games and this one is nice except for a few functions missing that was driving me insane (lack of a way to walk and still be able to attack if attacked). The upgrades are nice and I really like it. I posted a Hamachi network below for anyone who wants to play online. My comp hates this game so I will be on the name Caleb (bro's comp). The units are very nice, and the upgrades really are awesome. Any other specific questions just ask. Saga adds those features that I missed. Wahoo!

The Saga version Contains Both the Original game
http://pc.ign.com/objects/015/015959.html (http://pc.ign.com/objects/015/015959.html)
AND the expansion
http://pc.ign.com/objects/477/477278.html (http://pc.ign.com/objects/477/477278.html)

I picked it up on ebay for cheap which was nice.

Is that Galactic Battlegrounds?

Yes sir. I did not get the full title on here.
Is it online only?
Nope. You can play over a LAN connection, or 1 player. I use Hamachi (Network: Starwarsbattleground PW: Chewie) For the IP connections.

Oh cool! I thought it was online only, so I never bought it. My son and I play over LAN in other games, like Age of Empires.

Thanks for the info!  ;D

I loved that game, the attack walk thing did get annoying but it means you had to watch your troops when you sent them somewheres, unless you set them on patrols and stuff. Man! I'ma try and get a game on with you sometime, me and my bro used to compstomp a lot with that game back in the day, we never played online tho. I forgot what faction I was using the most...either rebels or republic or trade fed I think...

Yeah, I'm a complete noob at this point. I'm trying to get a feel for the factions atm.  Any tips?

Yes, and air units which make walls basically a joke.

I have this and the expansion.  That game was fun.

Very much fun. I sorta fell in love with fully upgraded Jedi Masters (I always am near 3 veins of nova crystals :-p) their conversion ability + Fully upgraded anti air and normal troops allow my lil guys to protect the masters as they convert everything.

its ok but AoE3 is more realistic >.> it doesnt take 200 AT-ST's to kill Darth Vader(although in AoE3 you can put in a cheat for a monster truck  ;D ) but thats a cheat <<

Ok DV is a sith lord, He can block blaster shots remember? :-p So you have to give him more HP or code him to reflect damage, which is more powerful...more hp...or reflect damage? :-p It is hard to make Jedi in games be balanced cuz In Star Wars they were complete haxorz. They could beat anything cept an army of 200+ clones+tanks+200+ droids+ their tanks+ the element of surprise that they didn't see coming.

Also: When has star wars EVER been realistic?

P.s. It doesn't even take 20 to kill DV.

That ability is awesome but houses actually can be used as walls for defense

I was just researching it and found out that you meant that literally. The Genie engine is the same in SWBG and AoEII. Now I really want it since my son and I love AoEII.

There are not very many on eBay and they're not that cheap (for me). I downloaded the demo from GameSpot.com so that my son and I could try it out until I can buy the full version. The demo only allows the Darth Vader Scenario for one-player (no free play), but you can do multiplayer with up to four people (no computer opponents though). You also can not reach Level 4 Upgrades.

Schaef is right about the spaceships making walls useless, and they are very hard to see coming. My son kept attacking me with a fighter, but I could never get to where he was in time. You need to build anti-air turrets as soon as possible.

As far as the mighty Sith and Jedi, bounty hounters kill them too easily. My son had 5 Jedi Knights attacking my troopers and artillery, but my one bounty hunter took them all out.

Hey Schaef, you wouldn't be interested in selling or trading yours, would you?  :prayer:

Upgrading your air troopers to heavy ones and keeping a group of about 5 works for a great anti air force.

Bounty hunters are specifically made to take out sith/jedi. They needed SOME way to stop them. A Jedi can take out an army of troopers, if there wasn't some balance jedi teams would be insanely op'd.

I understand the logic, it just seems odd. It forces you to keep your army balanced, though. The Bounty Hunter is the equivalent of Stratego's Spy.

That one is from an Australian Seller. I have had problems in the past with international sellers/buyers on eBay, so that would be my last choice.

How long did it take to ship? Do you still have the seller's ID? Does the box have an official UPC label with a LucasArts copyright?

Basically, other countries have varying laws about copyright. I have bought things that ended up being illegal copies (in the US). I also have had problems with sellers disappearing after taking my money and international laws won't cover it. PayPal was supposed to protect me, but they didn't.

About a week or two, which coming from AU isn't surprising. Ill check with my mom (I'm not allowed my own ebay account for obvious reasons. I'm a spendaholic) It appears to have all the right labels but im not 100% sure. I'm not good at telling a fake upc from a real one.

I'll take your word for it, then. Silly me, I forgot that I would need two discs in order to play against my son.  :o

The most recent eBay auctions from US sellers ended well over $20. I guess I can take a chance on the AU seller since I can get two for under $25 and they are brand new and sealed.

Thanks for all the info! I would not have found this game without you bringing it up, and my son already loves the demo.  ;D

Actually no you don't. once you install it you can play multiplayer without discs on anyone connecting. The host computer does need a disc.
No problem

I received the discs from Australia today. That only took a week. The discs are indeed official. Thanks for the tip, since that saved me a bunch of money.

I was the Galactic Empire and my son was the Trade Federation. We had a computer player use the Gungans, who were surprisingly stronger than they were in the movie   ;)  ). I love the upgrades in the full version. My Imperial Walkers were huge! After playing Age of Empires all this time, seeing a single unit that took up half the screen was quite entertaining. However, the AirShips were the most potent unit overall. Unfortunately they destroy everything in range of their intense firepower. I lost more units to friendly fire than to enemy fire.  :o

BTW, an AirShip can kill Sith/Jedi Masters with just a few hits.

What's the deal with native colonies? Do they do anything? I was on Tatooine and I kept finding Jawa and Sandpeople settlements. Am I supposed to do something with them?

You guys also forgot to mention the random monsters. I know AoE had wolves, but having my Biker Scout get eaten by the tentacled pit that ate Boba Fett was a bit of a shocker.  :maul:

Gungans are really powerful, mostly because jar jar isn't there ;).

Yes it can, thats why I walk around with a batallion (30) of fully upgraded anti air troopers.

XD ah the sarlac pit, i have no idea about natives outside of story mode.

its ok but instead of endless units they are like in squads or something like that. the airships actually have their own battle times, you can send a fleet of ships to kill a character. there are space battles and planet battles. what i would like to see is AvP rts like AoE

SSBB on the Wii is the only game I have played online. What would I have to do to start an online game of SWBG with you guys?

My mom is visiting from NH, so I would not be able to play until next week if we do figure it out. I could probably do an abbreviated game just to test the connection.

try gamespyarcade.com.  I think you have to set up an account or whatever but SWBG is on the list of supported games.

Once upon a time, it was hosted by Zone but that's long dead.
