(if anyone has a Challonge account and wants me to link you to the bracket, feel free to send me your username or email)

The Finals have begun! Since this is the last round I won't put a date limit, but please try to finish it sooner than later, I'd like to have a fresh tournament for August. :P
-Reminder, the final is best of seven games as opposed to the best of 5 from previous rounds.

I have zero epics (currently, pulled one of the giants and dusted it for cards I needed) or legendaries but ya'll can play whatever you like as far as I'm concerned.
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: soul seeker on June 27, 2014, 02:49:40 PM
In my experience in Ranked mode, epics don't turn the tables of a game quite like Legendarys do.

I would be okay with 0 to 1 Legendary and no restrictions on Epics, but I'm okay with a Epic limit.  The only possible problem I see is that the current low minion Warlock meta can fit within your build criteria.

It depends on what day, but I'll try to swing it if I can! :)

I'm in. I'd like 1 Legendary and no epic restrictions (or maybe just like, 2).  I can understand the 0 legendary limit and would be okay with that too though.
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: Master KChief on June 27, 2014, 04:20:15 PM
If it's at least one Legendary and any number of Epics, I'm in.
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: browarod on June 27, 2014, 04:29:00 PM
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Based on people's preferences I've set the limit on Legendaries to 1 and that is the only restriction currently.

I don't know if everyone would be available on a certain day (like a Sat) to be on and do the entire tournament, so if not then we can just run it like ROOT with 1 match per week (or X number of days) and update as we go.

Would we want to do elimination or round robin?
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: soul seeker on June 27, 2014, 04:57:14 PM
My games (without a slow opponent) average around 8 minutes, therefore I vote for a round robin.  I play practically everyday to complete my daily quests, so I don't think it would be too difficult.
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: browarod on June 27, 2014, 04:59:35 PM
I do think round robin would be more fun, and since the matches go pretty fast I was also thinking of having it be a best of 3 (or 5, or whatever) just so that you get to play for more than just a few minutes once a week, lol.

Most tournament structures are double elim, best 3 of 5, final best of 7. Each player has 3 decks. Game 1 players blind pick their decks, then the losing player picks a new deck for the next game. Some tournaments also limit no duplicate classes, but I would have no problem with that as a restriction as this is a more friendly tournament and some people are new and do not have expanded collections.

With red101 signing up that makes us at 8 people, exactly enough for a double elim with losers bracket.

Goodness, you think I have 3 decks to play with? I don't even really have 1 good deck.
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: Master KChief on June 27, 2014, 05:25:43 PM
Which is why I said players should probably be allowed to play with duplicate classes if they wanted (hence, only 1 deck) :). I like the system a lot because it gives the game a bit of a sideboard-esque feel to it by allowing the loser to pick a new deck for the next match (while the winning player must still play with the same deck from last game).

Also for any interested, the Hearthstone WellPlayed Cup for $3k is going on and being streamed right now with some of the best players in the game (Reynad, Trump, TidesofTime, KitKatz, Rdu (winner of Dreamhack Summer 2014), etc). You can check out the stream on Twitch at http://www.twitch.tv/wellplayedhs (http://www.twitch.tv/wellplayedhs).

Number of decks aside, I like the idea of best of 5/7 but can you describe or lay out how double elim with loser's bracket works? I will admit I don't really know the terminology.
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament

Using the 8 man tournament as an example:

http://www.printyourbrackets.com/pdfbrackets/8teamDouble.pdf (http://www.printyourbrackets.com/pdfbrackets/8teamDouble.pdf)
(https://www.cactusforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.printyourbrackets.com%2Fthumbs%2F8-Team-Double-Elimination.gif&hash=c8495fc5d26caa5afd1ed2487cb75edadd39d7d9)

The 4 losers from the 1st round move down to the first round of the losers bracket and play each other.
The 2 losers from the 2nd round of the winners bracket moves down to play the 2 winners of the 1st round of the losers bracket.
The 2 winners of the 2nd round of losers bracket play each other.
The loser from the 3rd round of the winners bracket moves down to play the winner of the 3rd round of the losers bracket.
The winner of the 4th round of the losers bracket moves up to play the winner of the 3rd round of the winners bracket (Finals). Usually this is played out twice since one player will be undefeated. But since Hearthstone uses best of 7 for Finals, this really isn't necessary.

Are we capping it at 8 then?

I'm assuming Browarod will be organizing this. Challonge will do all the hardwork for you.

8 seems to be a good number so we can cap this first tourney here. I feel woefully uninformed, is Challonge a website?

Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament
Post by: browarod on June 30, 2014, 02:44:14 PM
Matches have been determined by random seed: http://challonge.com/RedHearthJuly14

Round 1 has begun! You have until 11:59pm CDT July 7th to complete your games and post your results.
-Results must be posted/confirmed by BOTH players, please include complete game results, not just the winner (i.e. Player A won 3-2 over Player B).

Prizes are unconfirmed as of yet (though there will be prizes at least for 1st place, probably second as well). I need to confirm some things with Ken first.

If 1 week is not sufficient for games please let me know and we can extend it.
-Also, this is my first time using Challonge so please let me know if anything is missing or incorrect.

I beat Redemption101 3-0 with a really key top deck in game 2.

He did switch decks in the middle of the round, which I'm not sure is legal, but it ended up not mattering.

Switching decks was against the rules in the first post, but since you won 3-0 I don't think it should matter.

I did have that rule in the first post but I don't think I announced it so we can let it slide this time.

For Rounds 2 and beyond: You must use the same deck for all games in the same round, you can only switch decks between rounds.

Bracket has been updated on the Challonge site. Since everyone finished their first round already I'm gonna go ahead and start Round 2.

Reminder: From here on out, you must use the same deck for all games in the same round, you can only switch decks between rounds.

EDIT: Round 2 has begun. You have until 11:59pm CDT next Saturday, 7/12, to complete your matches and post your results.

Round 2 reported scores have been updated on the site.

Reminder to the people who lost in Round 1 (since none of us have reported scores yet, lol): This is double elimination so you are still in the tournament unless you lose a second time. Please check the site for up-to-date standings and pairings. I'm facing Lampy this round so soul seeker and redemption101 are matched up as well.

Also - I'm going to be gone from Tuesday to Sunday to visit family, so if we start the next round early, I can't do my next set until at least Sunday night. :)
Thanks for letting me know! Regardless of when games end I'll have Round 2 go through the 12th so you shouldn't have to worry. :)

Double posting to announce that there are now 100% more prizes provided for this tournament! Confirmed with Ken who will be fulfilling them once this tourney is over.

The first place finisher, and grand champion of the first ever Redemption Forums Hearthstone Tournament, will receive 3 Early Church packs from the Phase One distribution (the same cards that will be available at Nationals) to be shipped as soon as Ken receives them from Rob/Cactus. If the champion doesn't want those, they can instead take a $15 credit, applied immediately, usable for any product from Three Lions Gaming. The difference in price is due to the packs option including shipping whereas the credit does not include shipping.

The second place finisher will, similarly, receive 2 Early Church packs from the Phase One distribution or, if they prefer, $10 credit to Three Lions Gaming (again accounting for shipping).

I will remind the appropriate players of this once the results are announced and all decisions for prizes should be relayed to me and I will coordinate with Ken.

Good luck and play well!

I do my best :3. But it wouldn't be a tournament without the participants so thanks all for playing!

I'm hoping to have a tournament like this maybe every month or so (as long as people want to play) to both keep interest in Hearthstone as well as this section of the boards and Redemption itself as well. I wish there was a way to provide prizes within Hearthstone itself but since there isn't I will continue to offer Redemption prizes for these tournies.

I'll play the next, or this one if there's still time. I always forget to check the boards since I don't play Redemption anymore - Is there something I can set that will e-mail when someone replies to this thread or something?

Lawfuldog#1874 is my battletag. Feel free to add me and message me whenever. Also, why the limit to 1 Legendary?
Title: Re: Hearthstone Friendly Tournament - Now with prizes! - Round 2: 7/5 - 7/12
Post by: browarod on July 11, 2014, 03:32:43 PM
There isn't any room in the current one unfortunately, but you're welcome to join the next one! I'm going to try to host them monthly just so you're aware. I won't always be able to offer such good prizes, but I'll try to provide SOMETHING to the winner (and second place when possible) each time.

I'm not an expert on board software, but there is a "Notify" button at the bottom of each thread near the Reply, Mark Unread, Send, Print buttons so maybe that's what you're looking for?

The Legendary limit was because this was intended to be a friendly tournament so we didn't want people that have just started playing to be at as much of a disadvantage to players who have accumulated lots of packs, gold, and/or dust. I don't think it's a restriction that we'll end up keeping, though, as there are plenty of good decks that use few to no legendaries anyway.

Update on me:
Friday: Got to hotel late. Internet was spotty, so the hotel rebooted the internet.  Couldn't connect until 12:30 AM
Saturday:  11 hour drive ahead of me as I make the final push for home.  I hope to have the teens home safely by 8 PM and I hope to be on around 9:30 PM after unpacking the car.

I apologize for holding this round up for everyone...I did not expect the internet connection to be poor or my time to be so limited this past week.

Apologies for not checking up on this yesterday, I was hanging out with family that was visiting the area.

Bracket has been updated and new matchups are current.

Round 3 has begun! You have until 11:59pm CDT July 21st to complete your games and post your results.
-2 players have now been eliminated and 6 players remain. Play well!

NOTE: Due to the double elimination format, the winner of Drrek & The Marti's match will have 1 round off while the "losers" bracket determines its contribution to the Finals. Since only one "losers" game will take place during that round it may be a shorter one (a few days rather than a week) but I just wanted to give a heads up.

The above games have been scored on the Challonge site.

Also, as a correction to my previous note: Drrek will have a bye the next round even though he lost as the losers bracket needs to put someone in the semifinals before the finals. As such, Marti will actually have a TWO-round bye for round 3 and then the semifinals of the losers bracket. I'm hoping to get both of those rounds done in a week but I just wanted to make sure you guys had the correct information.

Round "4" will have 2 halves: 4A which will be losers round 3 (as labelled on the site), and 4B which will be the semifinals for the losers bracket. 4A will most likely have 4 days (as it will be weekdays) and 4B will have the remaining 3 days of the week since they'll have the weekend to coordinate. Obviously this is subject to change as rounds may end early.

My internet is down at my apartment unfortunately. There's a technician coming this afternoon to look into it so I'm hoping to be back online and available for mine and Westy's game tonight and if so then we can start Round 4A earlier than the 21st.

Confirmed. Great games all around, all 5 of which were so close that usually it was within 1 turn of the other player winning.

Round 4A has begun!
-Reminder, only MKC and Westy are playing Roung 4A. When they finish, the winner of that game will play Drrek in Round 4B, the losers bracket semifinals. Then that winner will face off with Marti in the 7-round Finals!

-Reminder, only MKC and Drrek are playing Round 4B. When they finish, the winner of that game will play Marti in the Finals!

EDIT: Round 4B has been extended to July 23rd as I haven't heard back from either participant yet and I want to make sure they have time to finish.

Well then, I guess I didn't need to extend it. :P

Scores and bracket updated, the Finals are here! Drrek and Marti will face off (again) for the glory and prestige!

The Finals have begun! Since this is the last round I won't put a date limit, but please try to finish it sooner than later, I'd like to have a fresh tournament for August. :P
-Reminder, the final round is best of seven games as opposed to the best of five from previous rounds.

Good luck and play well!

But Drrek has to win 2 series of Bo7, right?

I'm not sure, I've never done a double elim tournament before. Does everyone have to lose twice to be out, including second place? If so, then yes they would need to play a second match of 7 if Drrek wins the first.

I believe that's how it works, because I wouldn't technically "be eliminated" after one loss.

Excellent point.

So this will be the first of possibly 2 sets of 7 and if Marti wins then that's the end, but if not then they'll play a second set. Not sure if the Challonge site will reflect that but we'll do it that way regardless.

Sorry for the incorrect information and thanks for the clarification everyone!

Challonge site is updated with the above results and it does have the second set for Drrek and Marti so it's all correct.

Good luck and play well!

Marti and Drrek, have you guys had a chance to play your second set? I'd like to have this finished up today or tomorrow if possible so I can get the requested prize order to Ken.

I'm writing up the post today (in between doing stuff at work, lol) so it'll be posted later today for sign-up. And there will be a special deck-building theme this month!
-There will be prizes again for the Aug tournament, however they will not be worth quite as much as this tourney because I'm not affluent enough to keep that up every month, haha. But there will be prizes!
