Title: T2 Garden Tomb
Post by: DaClock on August 18, 2009, 10:52:51 PM
What defense goes best with a Garden Tomb deck in T2?

Or, to phrase the question another way, what is the least used defensive color in T2?

Aside from a trial deck I built and, I've never seen someone play a gold defense outside of multi.  With the Herod boost, it may become more popular, but I kinda doubt it.

Similar story with orange and Gates of Hell (though since orange is often splashed, it may not be as big a deal).

I was thinking Gates of Hell may work well since I could just put the characters on bottom that I need with The Bronze Laver, that way they wouldn't be in play until I needed them to be.

I used to say orange, but I probably saw 6 orange defenses that players were using during high level tourneys.  I know I have always used it on a regular occasion, but it has seen more play.  In the southeast, it is bad to put evil gold with Garden Tomb, because Eric Largent and Josh Kopp play it without fail.

I don't really think any defense would be reliable enough so I'll probably include whichever works best and then build in a counter to that specific color on offense.

A suicide/auto block defense would work well since you're characters don't stick around long enough to help your opponent block against TGT.

In Type 2, Garden Tomb is great for early game to grab a couple freebies.  Then you have to use the rest of your offense in the middle game to clear evil characters.  In the end game, Garden Tomb once again is very powerful in T2 once you have wasted their ECs.

agrees with Kirk, and it works well in T2 multi, too.

I would have picked Black as the least used T2 color, but now with the new Philistine cards, I don't think that's going to be true anymore. I think your best bet is to go with a defense that can mess with the opponent's defense, and Pale Green with Women as Snares immediately comes to mind.

Ya, right now, pretty much all defenses will be/can be used. They are all very strong in their own way.
Your best bet might be a combination of what Justin and Gabe said.
Stand alones/Suicide characters (Uzzah, Red Dragon, Zimri/Otho) with Women as Snares to capture all their characters so it's harder for them to be able to block. You also have to be aware of protect forts/artifacts against capture, so pack a Set Fire/Spreading Mildew/Fort Killer and some artifact killers too.

I have barely seen crimson used at all. maybe in two decks total

a crimson defense would be the best bet for tgt. king merodach baladan to instantly play set fire, or a nebby/nergal/swift horses combo to search and play it as well. the new axe works incredibly good as well in getting rid of those protect forts.

One almost took first place at Nationals (still got second).
Every defense is viable and very workable for different situations.

I think crimson and black will be the two colors used far more then they had previously been used.  I've looked into the idea of a splash defense and I think it could be decienct except when facing another Garden Tomb deck.

Hey,

I used Orange in my T2 TGT deck at nationals.  It worked fairly well.  None of the racial fortresses protect from set aside, so you can just ignore them and Two Possessed by Demons their evil characters to your hearts content.

You mean the one where I activated Three nails and trashed you ;) ?
I like orange, and its much better now with Gates of Hell, but Three Nails still stops it stone cold, I don't care how many copies of Seven Sons of Sceva you have.

Multi colored.
