Title: What are competitive defenses in current meta and general?
Post by: Reth on February 06, 2019, 05:42:53 PM
Hi there,

just checking for having some defensive options available. Since I know that defense should support offense and overall deck concept as well as need to be consistent and hence cannot be analyzed independently I still want to start this discussion and exchange.

So IMHO single brigade or single them defenses (lika Canaanites for example) are currently not viable at all. Currently there seem to be lots of nearly same mixes of crimson/pale green stuff (mostly Babs and Magicians) splashed with some demons and/or animals. Sometimes having some nearly staples like Vittels in. (I assume FireFoxes, Uzzah and/or Foreign Wives are nearly staples at least for reserves including the Deceiver).

So do you have different experiences? Or what do you use/came across in which setups/scenarios? And what would you use if you'd need speed, searching/exchanging and Reserve acces? Looking forward to you experiences!

Bye

There's a couple mono-brigade options that are viable,

Babylonians benefit greatly from Merchants and Seige Army which require you to stick to Babylonians and Crimson respectively, but there's still 4-5 solid characters like Nebuchadnezzar, Nergelshezzar, and King Belshezzar that fit nicely, and you can still run Deciever for things in reserve like Uzzah. You could even still splash something like Vittles, draw and die.

The Great Fish works well with babylonians too. And you can always shove animals in your reserve to get out with carcasses if your merchants and army die.

I like grey also. Terrifying Beast, Domitian, and Entrapping rock. Its fast too obviously. Pair that with some deck pillaging things and your opponent has to make some tough decisions

Indeed - some grey guys are still very valid. But did anybody try the Canaanite giants when they came out or single canaanite defense?

When going for green as main good brigade it seems Babs are the best option - but are they better splashed with Magicians or Animals (or maybe even both)?

Hm, checked some gray options. While they are looking nice and also having great character abilities they seem to lack of interrupts (crimson provides a lot of interrrupts compared to gray). So how to best equip the big gray guys in order to compensate their missing ini potential then?

Every brigade has a lot of interrupts now.

Gray has the following interrupts/negates:  Begging for Grain, Unsuccessful (unless it's ruled the errata doesn't work as such), Crucify Him!, Plot to Kill, Expelling the Jews, Naaman's Horses, Israel Pays Tribute, Stoning of Stephen, and Gamaliel's Speech.

You can also use Herod's Temple to get around AotL and CBN discards when you don't have inish.

You can also use [EDITED BY R.O.S.E.S] if you find your emperors getting defeated without a negate in hand.

Right, negates are several available for gray. But in terms of interrupt there is only Stoning, Expelling, Chariot & Horses, Self Righteous Prayer (for some of them) and maybe Distortion.

For Crimson there is Christian Suing Another, Dream, (Escape - but not really), Nebbie's Pride, Seized by Babylon, Swift Horses, Treachery of Jezebel, Satan enters Judas.
But indeed: Gray has a lot of negate opportunities compared to crimson.

So what do you all think when comparing crimson ECs (mainly animals, old Red Dragon and Babs) to gray ones (mainly Roman and Pharisae)? Whom have the better SAs and the better splash potential with other brigades (e.g. gray with black seems good and crimson with Pale Green)?

And what is meant by R.O.S.E.S. again (did not find the explanation in older threads yet)?

Thanks - nice interpretation.  ;D

Keeping my questions still open - also especially the one what are you guys thinking about the SA comparison between crimson (babs, animals + old RD) vs. gray (Roman, Pharisae) and also their splashable options? Or do you need an offense for comparison? Ok, ATM I refer to a Musician offense with a slight prophets splash (well not a real one though).
