Card Grading
Special thanks to Darcy for compiling the card grading info
Mint (MT) -- A card with four sharp corners, 50/50 centering, no imperfections or signs of wear. Even cards straight out of the pack do not always grade mint.
Redemption = you can't see any white in the red border on the back of the card, and when you shine the light off of the card, there are no imperfections to be seen.

Near Mint (NM) -- A near-perfect card with perhaps one minor imperfection, such as one blunt corner. Centering is no worse than 60/40 and the card must have its original gloss.
Redemption = there may be one or two specs of white showing in the red border on the back of the card, and minor problems when you shine the light off of the card.
**Note** - This is the most common "mint" card I've received, and it simply is not "mint" by any collector's standards.

Excellent-Mint (EX-MT) -- A card with only two or three minor imperfections. Must have original gloss and centering no worse than 70/30.
Redemption = this will have some wear beginning to show in the red border on the back of the card, and there will probably be a few scratches to be seen on the front face of the card.
**Note** - This is also considered "mint" by many players. To a collector, this was a shabby deal if he/she thought he/she was getting a mint card.

Excellent (EX) -- A card with a few minor imperfections. Some original gloss is lost and the edges show moderate wear. All four corners typically show some wear. Centering is no worse than 75/25.
Redemption = this will have wear showing, but color is still good, and the card looks pretty nice to the eye. There should be no creases or significant scratches on the card, but this card has obviously seen some gaming.

Very Good (VG) -- A card that shows obvious handling but is still attractive despite wear and imperfections. A VG card may have a crease, but one that's not severe enough to make the card unattractive. Most of the original gloss is lost.
Redemption = this card is similer to EX, but might have a small crease or two.
**Note** - This card is usually not legal in tournament play without card protectors.

Good (G), Fair (F), Poor (P) -- A very worn card with many major imperfections. Collectors use cards of these grades as fillers until better ones can be found.
Redemption = this card usually does not have a "white" border on the front face of the card as it is discolored. This card also may have significant creases, and you just wouldn't want to show this one off.
**Note** - This card almost never makes for a tournament legal card unless it is in a card protector.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me JSquaredAllstud[at]aol.com

God bless, and happy trading!

Post by: RedemptionRocket on November 22, 2006, 01:40:34 PM
I'm not so sure that the centering of the image on a card can be brought into the realm of a Redemption card's condition.  Unlike baseball and other sport cards, it appears that the machines that print Redemption cards are notorious for off-centering images on cards and giving them non-even borders...in fact it's almost more normal to have an off-center card (60/40 or 70/30) than it is to have a 50/50 card!  Quality used to be better back in the Women, Prophets, and Warriors, but ever since Angel Wars, and ESPECIALLY in the Priests, the quality of the cards w.r.t centering has gone way down.  I suspect that this is because the cards are printed in China now, and I don't know if that has always been the case...but the quality of Priest cards is nowhere near what they used to be back in the "good ol' days".

Other examples of poor packaging/etc of new Priest packs is that some of the cards COME IN THE PACKS scuffed up, have a bent corner, and worst of all there are packs that have no Rare or Ultra Rare!  Right, that's only 9 cards, not 10...what a jip.  I've seen other packs that have  11 cards, one Rare and one Ultra Rare...so it's safe to say that if you have a pack missing a card, that extra card should be an Ultra Rare and somebody else just got a bonus.  Nice job, Cactus.  :P

Post by: RedemptionRocket on November 22, 2006, 01:49:43 PM
One more thing about the Priests cards...some of them I've been noticing are FADED.  That's right, the images on the card are FADED.  Again, says something about the quality of the cards in packs nowadays...

Mint should be a card that is just out of a pack...cards just out of packs should NOT come in non-mint quality.  "Mint" is essentially the base case for a card, freshly from a pack.  If it comes either off-centered or faded, then it is still "mint".  Perhaps less than desirable for some collectors...but that is Cactus' fault, not the person who purchased the pack.

If the person who purchased the pack then goes and plays with the previously "mint" card, and gets it worn, or bent, or otherwise used, it then lowers in condition and therefore price.

"Mint" means "perfect": not faded, scuffed, bent, off-center, or anything else. Some cards are better non-Mint (WotB Errors, anyone?) but for the most part, even if they're straight out of the pack, if they aren't perfect they aren't mint.

Title: Re: Trading Tips
Post by: MrMiYoda on January 21, 2007, 06:42:18 PM
*ON TRADING:
1.  Hang around the Redemption® Market forums regularly.
2.  Study the supply and demand activity of cards being traded.  This will give you enough info and knowledge to present a powerful proposal that frequently gets the 'nod' from your trading counterparts.
3.  Make sure to send your share ASAP.  It will make you and your counterpart feel good.
4.  Ask your trading counterpart to E-mail you a proposal that he/she has posted on the boards.  The final E-mail exchange not only becomes your legal and binding agreement, your E-mail becomes a great reminder tool to fulfill your side of the deal promptly.
5.  If you think you would be delayed in mailing/shipping your share of the deal,  immediately E-mail or post a note on the boards about the delay.  DO NOT wait for your counterpart to E-mail or post a query mentioning a request for a reason why you haven't sent you share yet.
6.  Follow-up inquiries and trades pending final decisions.  There is many a moment that your counterpart may have completely forgotten about his/her request.  This increases your trading volume as more follow-ups convert to 'done' trades.
7.  Always try to leave positive reference for a completed deal by mentioning the name or pen-name of your counterpart on our Trade References forum.
8.  Use pricelists from Doug Gray, Chris Bany, Ken Locklin, and even Scott Stamp for your sales and trades.  Use your judgment, gut, and instinct as you prepare your sale or trade proposal.
9.  Ask advice from frequent traders.  Kirk Dennison is a great gauge for most trade values, who is my best teenage trader.  I also recommend Ben Shadrick, a trading rookie and barely in his teens, who's got great trading talent, to help you with your trading value 'weighing scale'.
10.  Ask advice from veteran traders.  They are the best to answer questions regarding the 'fairness' of trade proposals.  They can give you the best tips on how to succeed with lots of your trading efforts.  Rest assured you will not be shunned nor snobbed.  They have the widest range of knowledge of cards and card values dating from the beginning of Redemption®.  Stephen Schaafer and Justin Alstad are on top of my 'active' veteran list of advisers.
11.  Determine whether your trading counterpart wants your card/cards for collection only, or for play.  It makes your proposal preparation a lot easier to handle.

*ON SELLING:
1.  If ever you wish to make an overt or covert counter-offer to sell the same card/s on an existing seller's post being offered by him/her, DO NOT do it.  The seller usually announces if his current sale offer has fallen through.  Make the offer to the buyer, hence, and NOT on the seller's post.  PM or E-mail the intended buyer if you wish not to create your own selling post.
2.  To make a counter offer and wish to post a reply on a current seller's post, the best etiquette is to word your reply similar to the following:
"Sylvester, should your deal with George fall through, kindly PM or E-mail me so that I can share with you my proposal".  This is ONLY if you decide not to create your own post/thread for items to sell.  Try to avoid making a habit of this approach.
3.  We had an 'auction' thread in the past message board.  Justin could revive this project to accommodate both sellers and buyers alike (i.e. "Buckler" up for bids OR "I need a Buckler -- want best prices".

...... more to come as memory permits.

BLESSINGS ALL!!!

I want to make everyone aware that "Haseverycard" offered me a free AB deck with a purchase I made. He later decided after he had money in hand not to fulfill the offer of the deck. I want to be clear that he did provide the cards that I purchased but not the incentive he promised.

I will let you know if he decides to make good. Until he does so. I would be leary of dealing with him.

xCaLeBx (Caleb Priest) - Traded twice and had problems both times.  Says his cards are NM, then send me worn/creased/played cards.  Always have him send first.

I'll come back and edit this post as new trades are completed.

Thanks to all of you!

Title: POSTAGE INFO~PLEASE READ!!!
Post by: YourMathTeacher on November 26, 2007, 06:10:04 PM
I wanted to make everyone aware of problems I have been having with USPS deliveries. I received two envelopes today from forum trades that had postage due. I think we need to make sure that everyone is aware of new postal rates and how they affect trading.

New postal rates apply not only to weight, but to width. Just putting cards in a standard white envelope does not mean that they will ship with one stamp. If you have a stack of cards thicker than a toploader, you might need to pay more than one stamp. I saw the new device that postal workers use for the new thickness guidelines. It is a board with slots. They basically try to drop your envelope through the slot. If it fits through with no catching, then one stamp will work. If it sticks at all, the worker has the discretion to let it go or charge more. If it doesn't fit at all, then you automatically pay more.

It is important to note that some of the envelopes will be up to the postal worker and that may change from state to state. If in doubt, add the extra stamp. Don't stick others with the extra postage charge.

If anyone has cards that they are waiting abnormally long for, this may be part of the cause. Your best bet is to keep envelopes to toploader width only. If you have a bunch of cards (not just two or three) that you are ready to mail, take it to the Post Office. Don't just stick one stamp on it and drop it into a mailbox, because you may not have enough postage.

That is all. We will now return to our normal programming.
Title: Re: PLEASE READ!!!
Post by: YourMathTeacher on November 26, 2007, 07:17:10 PM
By "toploader" I meant the hard plastic sleeve/case that most people use. You can fit one of those without a problem. When I ship two, I usually tape them side by side and put them in a longer white envelope. If you stack them together, they will run into the "sometimes sticking" category, which means there is a 50/50 chance that they will require more postage. Three or more toploaders will likely require more postage.

BTW, using soft sleeves will not necessarily put you in the clear. It still depends on how many cards are in the sleeves (which affects thickness).

Have you gotten cards from me that required extra postage? I've been sending cards in the bubble mailers and wasn't aware of the width rule.
Title: Re: PLEASE READ!!!

Have you gotten cards from me that required extra postage? I've been sending cards in the bubble mailers and wasn't aware of the width rule.

No. I have already contacted the people involved. I wasn't really planning on going postal over 70 cents. I just wanted people to be aware.

Typically, if you use the bubble envelopes, you pay more than 41 cents anyway. The problem is usually with regular white envelopes that are over-stuffed, but only have one stamp. The other problem that I have had is the automatic USPS sorters tearing those white envelopes to shreads. I have received three different USPS baggies with mangled envelopes.

Basically, I do not recommend that you put two or more hard plastic cases in a white envelope unless you can secure them from "stacking" before they get to the sorters.

Looking at the grading list at the top of this thread, I would suggest adding a new grade called "gem mint" to the top of the list.

For reference see:
http://pages.ebay.com/buy/guides/graded-sports-cards-buying-guide/

Obviously Redemption cards do not grade out the same way as sporting cards, as noted in the initial grading list in this thread.  However, it appears that the meaning of "mint" is still somewhat unclear, and that perhaps a truly perfect card needs the highest of the high grades.

I am revisiting this thread because I have received two trades in recent weeks with Postage Due. A few cents here and there is one thing, but this is seriously getting ridiculous. Please take your package to the Post Office if you are trading more than four cards.

You can not send a whole bunch of cards in a regular white envelope for one stamp.

I've been shipping in bubble mailer for the extra protection, shur it may cost a little more loose change, but is well worth the peace of mind. They are considered Parcel Post so they don't get shoved through size slots. They weigh em, put postage on em and into the box they go for your delivery pleasure.

Godspeed,
Mike
Title: Re: POSTAGE INFO~PLEASE READ!!!
Post by: RedemptionRocket on June 04, 2008, 01:14:22 PM
For 1-5 cards, I am able to ship with two cards in the semi-rigid top loader and the rest in a soft plastic sleeve taped to the top loader (with a 1/2 sheet of paper wrapped around the whole thing) for the postal minimum (42 cents now).

Anything over five cards (or exceptionally expensive orders, like two FSPs or something) and less than 50 usually calls for the bubble mailer.  If you buy the stock bubble mailers that they sell in stores or post offices, it can run you a pretty penny.  The best way to get around this is to buy:

1) medium sized manila envelopes w/butterfly tabs (similar in size to the stock bubble mailers; can be that cheaper store brand, I got mine at Staples)
2) a roll or two of regular bubble wrap (can be that cheaper store brand as well, I got mine at Wal-Mart)

Then all you have to do is grab a scissors, cut the bubble wrap to fit the envelope (piece on top, piece on bottom, cards go in the middle).  A little Scotch tape also helps keeps things together...and the cards centered in the package, helps keep them protected.

For 50+ cards, it's usually best to upgrade to a hard cardboard box, and packing peanuts (if ya got 'em, use em...and boy to I have plenty). :)

I don't recall saying or thinking that anyone on these boards is a horrid trader.  I've never had a terrible experience trading on these boards.  Every problem I've encountered has been worked out and can be explained by youth or inexperience. :)

In your case, Caleb, we've only traded twice.  There were problems both times.  I'm sure you've learned from experience and improved but I have to make my recommendation based on those trades.  When/if we trade again I'll be sure to update my refs accordingly. ;)

NeverSmDkTwice took my money through PayPal and ran. He won't respond to my emails and never sent the cards. He does not seem to have been on recently, but if he does come back, don't send him money because he may steal yours too.

For those in the PayPal know, I issued a Buyer Complaint and PayPal ruled in my favor since he never responded to them either. However, since he has no money in his account, I got nothing. So FYI, even using PayPal will not protect you.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this is a Christian message board. People will cheat you here just like anywhere else.

Frankly, I am sick of all the deception people on these boards try to get away with. Why can't Christians just tell the truth to each other, especially when trading a Christian card game. Over and over again I get the same thing. "I sent them back on _____" when they really didn't. Don't you people realize that the USPS postmarks the envelope? I know exactly when you sent the cards. If you're waiting to receive the other person's cards first, or you forgot, or whatever, just tell them the truth. I think we can all handle the truth even if we disagree on who has to send first.

This deception is what makes it worse throughout the boards. We start expecting people to not send their cards, so we delay sending ours. I must admit that I have done that, too, with people who are new or have negative feedback. But for experienced traders who have positive feedback on this thread? Why? What's your excuse?

I've vented on various threads about the "lost in the mail" so "I'll send a new set" lie. Sure it happens that mail gets lost, but not as much as it does on these boards and always by the same people.

At some point it just needs to stop. Tell the truth.
Title: Re: Tips~Trade References~Auction Info

I guess I'll post my thoughts on this. I agree there is lying and deception on the boards, and it just isn't right. That being said, does that mean everyone is lying, and deceiving each other? No. In some instances they are telling the truth and people just don't believe it beings others have lied using the same scenario.

Rawrlolsauce, why did you lie about when you sent the cards? Why not just tell the truth? You didn't send your cards until you received mine. Was that so hard? You were wrong to do that without telling me, but to lie about sending them on December 3rd goes beyond.
According to my dictionary, a lie is "Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression." You may disagree, but I don't think that telling you something that I thought to be true should be considered a lie. I'd also like to point out that we had traded once in the past, where you didn't send your cards until I told you that yours were in the mail. If I trusted you then, what has changed now? What reason do I have to wait to receive your cards before sending mine?

In the future, I will not be trading with you. It isn't because you're a dishonest trader, but I don't want to associate myself with someone who falsely accuses me of lying.
Title: Re: Tips~Trade References~Auction Info
Post by: Rawrlolsauce! on December 14, 2009, 05:58:11 PM
Like I said earlier, I don't look at my messages word for word and make sure that everything is correct. I type what pops into my head that conveys the message, which will occasionally leads to some miscommunication. I almost always say "I sent your cards out" to other people I trade with, and half the time I do. The other half of the time there is something stopping me (time constraints, weather, lack of stamps, etc etc) from sending them out, so I ask someone else to if they will be headed by the post office a bit later. I understand your point and how you see that is lying, and in the future I'll be more accurate, but I still don't feel that is lying despite it not being true.

The difference, simply, is that I told you that I was not sending out my cards until you sent out yours, so that our cards went out at the same time. You had said that you could not send out your cards right away, remember? That's quite a difference from saying that you sent out the cards, when you did not.
I just looked back at my old messages and only found one of them that hinted we were sending at the same time before I sent them out, and it was as follows:
Let me know when you are ready to send the cards out.
Even then, that isn't clear. But this is all besides the point anyway. I'm just trying to figure out my motive for sending late. We traded once in the past, we both trusted each other and it went over fine. Why would I wait to get yours this time.

I'd offer to give you my mom's number, and you could call her and ask her, but I doubt she'd like me giving away her number on the internet

I'm not going to post on this subject anymore. I'll let future traders decide if they want to trust me or not.
Title: Re: Tips~Trade References~Auction Info
Post by: Rawrlolsauce! on December 15, 2009, 11:23:17 PM
I know on my last post I said I wasn't going to post on this subject anymore, but I guess that was a lie. I'm posting this to explain my reasoning for telling him "I can't send them right away". After this post, I'm done. No more posting on this subject, no more trading not in person, and no more posting except the occasional ruling question. I don't like being called a liar, and I don't like being harassed. Hopefully these measures will help eliminate those.

Flashback to our first trade, when he was not able to "send the cards out right away." Guess who's fault that was..... mom.

What I would like to know is whether his mom knows that he drags her into his lies.
Please look at the dates the messages were sent. We agreed upon the first trade on Friday, and this last one I agreed to late night Thursday: both the first week of the month. My parents are divorced and I am legally obligated to travel to my father's house (in Iowa) (if you don't want to believe me on that either, go ahead and ask Ring Wraith or one of the moderators. Ring Wraith's father started holding his tournaments on the second weekend of every month instead of the third weekend of every month so I can go to them without having to switch weekends, which always turns out to be a mess. The moderators should have IP logs of me on various weekends from a computer in Little Cedar, Iowa.) the first and third weekend per month, Friday to Sunday. We exchanged addresses over the weekend in the first trade. Beings I was in Iowa, I did not have my cards with me so I was unable to organize them and send them. When I got back home I assembled the cards we agreed upon and, beings we were out of stamps, they were mailed on Tuesday.

This time we agreed to the trade Thursday night. I didn't get a chance to assemble the cards, as I went to sleep. I did not have time to assemble your cards or label the envelope before going to school Friday morning, and I did not return home before going to my father's house. When I got home Sunday night, I assembled your cards and labeled the envelope. Due to reasons I described earlier (weather), I did not feel comfortable just throwing them in my mailbox so I gave them to my mother to put in a public mailbox.

EDIT: I'm not saying I'm in the right, because I'm not. I agree that some of my messages were unclear, and I apologize for that. I should not have confirmed the cards had been sent (assuming they were) when I had not did it myself or received conformation, and I apologize for that. But I, in no way, intended to provide YMT false information. I just told him what I thought to be true.

EDIT: I'm not saying I'm in the right, because I'm not. I agree that some of my messages were unclear, .... But I, in no way, intended to provide YMT false information. I just told him what I thought to be true.

This is ultimately the only thing I am trying to get you to confront. You were not "unclear" and you did not present "what you thought to be true." This is what you said:

They were dropped off in one of those blue mail boxes at about 9pm on Monday.

This is not a vague generalization or unclear thought. "9PM on Monday in a blue mail box" is not unclear. That is about as precise of an answer as one can give. If what you are claiming about your mom were true, then you are now suggesting that your mother lied to you and told you that she had put the envelope in a blue mailbox at 9PM on Monday. However, you also claim that you gave it to your mom and then "she forgot it and didn't mail it until Friday without telling me." If she didn't tell you, then how did you come to the conclusion that it was put into a blue mailbox at 9PM on Monday?
She said she'd drop it in on her way home from work (she is a home health aid). She finishes that client she went to on that day at about 8:30, and then there is a bit of time in the drive home. I estimated, and assumed she got into town just before nine and dropped it off then. I just specified blue so you'd know what I was talking about, the public mail boxes around town.

I have no problem confessing to something wrong I did. However, under no circumstances will I admit to doing something wrong when I haven't.

I have to say I believe Sauce at the moment. Not only is his story believable, but YMT just wants to keep telling him that he is lying instead of listening to what he has to say. Then YMT accuses him of wasting his talents and not using them for God? That's just low and I don't think acceptable on these forums.

Frankly, I don't care who you believe.

To prevent confusion, I just recommend only saying the cards were sent when you know for sure they were.  I have done the same thing once or twice; I say the cards were sent, I forget, they sit on my desk for a day or two, then I'm late and the info I told the other person isn't true.  Lying might not be the right word per se, but it definitely is confusing.

I understand you weren't trying to "lie", but it definitely isn't the full truth when this happens.  Doing it "half the time" isn't right.

@LN, I don't want to irritate the situation more, but your response sounds like a debate judge, looking at the arguments and seeing who "wins".  When there is a disagreement, I don't think it is the 3rd person's place to take sides and "vote" for someone.  Just MHO though.

IMHO, I think it is time to end this discussion.  The fact is, we know something happened in the transaction.  Take from it what you will.

Fact is, we are ALL HUMAN and make mistakes.  Lets just move on.

But of course. I'm not THAT young. Okay, so I wasn't born when it came out, but I saw it last year.

You two are as bad as a Democrat and a Republican. You both believe that you are completely in the right, and the other is completely in the wrong. Just let it go. Frankly this bickering is starting to get ridiculus, take it back to PM, you're both looking like immature 4 year olds, regardless of whose right.

I have removed my posts related to my disagreement with Rawrlolsauce. Anyone else who posted can choose to remove/leave/edit their posts as they see fit. I did not want all of that to clutter up the trade references. The issue is dead in my book.

Title: What's the Definition of "mint"?
Post by: Noah on February 24, 2011, 03:43:19 PM
I'm mainly asking this because I've heard that it's mint if you haven't played with it, but that doesn't seem to make sense. For example, I by a card mint, it's been in a sleeve it's whole life, then I play with it one or two games and sudenly it becomes unmint.
Title: Re: What's the Definition of "mint"?
Post by: Crashfach2002 on February 24, 2011, 03:46:51 PM
This all depends on the person you are talking to.  Some people fell like some cards (even out of the pack) are never mint, based on the alignment of the card.  Some people feel like a card that is fresh out of the pack, never used is mint.  Some people also feel that even if you play with a card, if it has no visible wear anywhere, then it is still mint.

Mint means there are no imperfections. Many cards that come straight out of packs are not mint. I've also never seen a TXP card that is mint.

That would be Ken.

Ken is one of the pickiest people on the boards.  He likes his cards to have perfect alignment as well as no visible damage.  There is nothing wrong with these, but about 50% of the Priests cards don't have perfect alignment out of the pack, so they become "non-mint" based on nothing you do.  Of course this means the cards you get from him are in great shape!

TLG is a can't miss for buyers. However, Even the best definitions are subject to the buyer's interpretation. When trading or selling, In my opinion, if Mint is the requirement one should allow the deal to be undone if the receiver is not satisfied with the card's condition. Especially since there is no arbitrator.

any aromatic herb of the genus Mentha,  having opposite leaves and small, whorled flowers, as the spearmint  and peppermint.

Mint is also a pretty nice card that can be played outside of a sleeve, and isn't ripped, bent, washed in a washing machine, or eaten.
