Title: Links to all trade references
Post by: Prof Underwood on February 26, 2010, 10:31:41 AM
The purpose of this thread is to be the place where anyone can go to quickly leave feedback after a trade with someone, or to check someone's trading history.  If anyone would like to be included in this project, then please reply to this thread with a simple message of "I want to participate".  Please include your board name and your real name so that people won't get confused.

At that time a thread will be created specifically for you, and a link will be placed on the next post to direct people to that thread.

I would like to participate
I'll add you, and create a thread for people to give you feedback.  It only seems fitting that the first person to join would be you, since you were the person who inspired this idea to begin with.  Thanks for sharing your creativity with all of us.

We already have a thread for refs.  Why do we need another one?
Because although that thread is easy to use for GIVING feedback, it is not easy to use for RESEARCHING feedback.  Someone would have to scroll through every page looking for info on the one person they are considering trading with.  This method will make it easy for both.

And it's not listed by board name...

I, 3 Liner and Bags of Chips a.k.a. Dwayne Ford, would ove to participate in this. I think it is a great idea and is very organized too. Def more better than the last one. The last one was just people posting in one thread so you couldn't see much...this one, each person gets their own thread and is much more easier to find things kudos prof u

That's exactly why the search engine was invented 17 years ago.  When in a thread, type a user name into the search bar, and boom, a list of all the people that have referenced them in their post.  For example, a search for 'sk' brings up the lists of Cameron, YMT, Gabe, and Kirk, with my name highlighted and everything.

The problem with this is the market will now be super cluttered with both trade posts and reference posts, and it'll be harder for us to find what many of us are really looking for.

That won't help very much.  Having 90 threads of trade references continually updated will still clutter the unread posts feature, and those that are selling cards will get fewer eyes since trading is the primary use of the current board.

Additionally, how is creating a new sub-board that will become just as cluttered as the current thread help any?  Plus, now the mods have dozens of new threads to read through... much more work than a single thread.  If you don't like the current formatting in the current references thread, just ask everyone to unify the look of their posts.  Or use search.  Cough.  (https://www.cactusforums.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcactusgamedesign.com%2Fmessage_boards%2FThemes%2Fdefault%2Fimages%2Ffilter.gif&hash=1f19de815f212a9754c7823a69ef02ca9fcf01d6)

I love the way that this trade reference thread (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=19363.0) is set up. It's compact and covers all the bases in just one thread, which I think is sticky-worthy.
Actually, I do really like that thread by SS.  The only problem there is that it is out of date every time someone posts a trade feedback on anyone.  Whereas the one that I just made is only out of date every time someone new wants to participate.  If SS is willing to we could combine our threads into one.  He could make the individual threads for people, and then make the names on his list be links to those pages.

The only problem with the "search" function is that often people either don't use it, or try to use it and can't find things (which makes them less likely to use it the next time).

The only problem with the "search" function is that often people either don't use it, or try to use it and can't find things (which makes them less likely to use it the next time).

Then:
1. Use it, everyone.  And
2. If you're not good with searching with Boolean logic, just use a single word, like you would with a concordance.  That type of search works best with the boards.  In this case, just put the user name into the search bar to see results.  (Try it on the other thread with 'sk'.  I'll wait.)  See?

Perhaps we can ask Schaef to make a Child Board under the Market for Trade References. That way we can have plenty of room for references without clogging up the actual Buy/Sell/Trade section.

If that happens, I think each person should create their own thread, where people then can post.  I don't think we need a number system as reading a few references would be better.

I still think it would be best if one person actually created the individual threads for people.  That way they can't just delete their own thread and start over if they get negative feedback.

Speaking of which, I'm still glad to create a thread for anyone who wants to participate in this.  Just post here with your real name and forum name, and I'll add you in to the system.

There's still room for others here.  Just to remind everyone, this is the place where you can come to quickly read about the trading history of anyone you are about to make a trade with.  It is also the place where you can come to quickly leave a message about someone you have just finished trading with so that others may benefit from your experience.

If you're referring to the new trade system that is now built into the boards, then no.  To do that you just click on the person's name to take you to their profile, and then click on the link that talks about leaving trade feedback.

On the other hand, if you want to go into more detail about a trade with someone than simply a + 1, then this is a good place to do it.  You just go to the first post of this thread, and click on their name.  That will take you to their personal trade reference thread, and you can leave your experience there.  Then others can read it and learn from you experience as well.
