If my opponent goes on a rescue attempt with hidden treasures, there is not a battle until I block, meaning he cannot play an enhancement till I block, correct?

To anwer your title, a battle begins when you place your first hero in the Field of Battle.

Unless your opponent doesn't have Golgotha, in which case those Green/Teal guys become almost as good as Paul.

Too much time but sooo worth it if you get it off the first turn or so. And better have bunch of protection for it
