For a 3 player type 1, for your turn, do you choose who to battle or attempt a rescue?

Yes, in a multi-player game you can attack any other player (either a rescue attempt or battle challenge).

Multi-player games can also be 4 or 5 players--if you get to 6 then it's recommended you split into two games of three.
