Title: Tourneys and Plots
Post by: Cousin It on October 25, 2010, 09:05:12 PM
I was thinking about this and couldn't figure it out.  Why exactly is it that, in a type 2 tournament when someone uses a Haman's Plot he must take out a good card to balance his good/evil but he's not allowed to add an evil card instead?  My first thought was that adding a card to your deck after deck check is obviously illegal because you're messing with your deck.  But taking out a good card is messing with your deck just the same.  If a judge is going to watch and make sure he takes out a good card to balance it, couldn't he just as easily watch the guy put in an evil card to do the same?

Also, if the person started the tournament with a legal deck then plays a HP, what's to keep him from playing the rest of the tourney just a card short?  It's game rules that made his deck not balanced, why should it HAVE to be balanced before each round?

Just some things I was curious to get other people's thoughts on.  Feel free to tear them apart as I'm sure you will. :P

Do you really want to face 5 hp every round?

Make the deck 105 Cards, so when you rip one, your deck will still be legal.

That is why some people make 51 card decks.  ;)

um...wrong

yeah basically it's so that people have to have a sacrifice for that and plus if people have multiple HP's then you wouldn't want them to add in more once they've torn one.

Just use Haman's Gallows. I had 5 HPs played against me in one game last tournament. One was ripped.

It is against tournament rules to add cards, but removing cards is legal in the case of an illegal deck.  In T2, since you can't replace the evil card, a good card must also be removed to keep the deck legal.  Thus, to still have a legal deck after ripping 5 HP's, you need at least 111 cards in your deck - the HPs that get removed, the 5 good cards, and a lost soul to remove when you get to 105.

Yeah, addign cards to make a deck legal would be a poor mans version of a side board.

Sorry this is way late, haven't had internet for 4 days.

Sorry, just had to say that this comment made me laugh SOO hard.  XD

I understand that's how it's ruled, I just didn't know if there was any specific reason as to why that is.  It doesn't seem that much different to add 1 card vs to take out 1 card.  It would actually be easier in most cases.  Is there any reason behind why it's done this way?  Or was that just what it was decided upon from the start?

To stop people from replacing torn Plots with new Plots, probably.

Well, um, when I rip one, it just discourages the other opponent and makes the room smell.

And I make 63-70 card decks.

Then why not say you can put in a new evil card as long as it's not another Plot?  Still seems much easier for me, for the players, opponents, and officials.

adding evil cards when there is a possibility of you seeing other people's decks would probably be considered cheating or at least should be.

Or you could just have the person also check one additional evil card separately for each Plot in their deck, and have them in a prearranged order that they use to replace Plots as they use them. That would take the "knowledge of other decks" variable out of the equation.

Haman's Plot is far and away the most powerful evil enhancement in the game. That is the reason it was given the "You must tear this in half" ability in the first place, so that people would have to make a sacrifice to use it. If you use Haman's Plots in a T2 deck, you should be forced to make the sacrifice of having to take out a good card when you tear it. That's how it's been, and that's how it will be for the foreseeable future.
