Title: Special Ability Question

Name: Esther Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Purple • Ability: 6 / 6 • Class: None • Special Ability: While Esther is in play all characters except Haman are immune to Haman's Plot. This ability cannot be negated. • Identifiers: OT Female Human, Queen (Media-Persia), Royalty • Verse: Esther 2:17 • Availability: Promotional cards (2003 Local Tournament) • Background

Do I have to either make a battle challenge or rescue attempt to activate Esther's special ability or does it activate once it's drawn? (I do understand that in most cases, it would only be during a BC/RA, but since it's while she's in play, I wasn't sure. Another, stupider question: Can I activate a character's special ability at any time? For instance, if I use Gomer (who's SA is band to any evil male character), can I band at any time during the BC/RA or only at the beginning?

Every special ability happens exactly and only upon entering battle. Some may linger after (like Death & Hades, Aaron, or Esther) but must first occur upon entering battle. You cannot choose to use it later, you cannot choose to use it earlier, it's then or never.

Except maybe Gamaliel, but no one knows how that card works. ;)

How does Gamaliel work?  :P

Gamaliel may choose to interrupt and prevent any enhancement immediately after the enhancement is played.  However, once another enhancement is played on the evil Pharisees or Sadducees, the previous enhancement can no longer be interrupted and prevented.

That seems to run counter to how special abilities normally work, which is why I pointed it out. But I don't mean to hijack the thread...
