Title: setting aside after battle
Post by: Ryupeco11 on February 27, 2011, 08:31:50 PM
ok so this came up in a friendly game the other day.

If I set aside my heros with feast of trumpets after my battle phase do they come back during my upkeep next turn or after my battle phase next turn? I had thought that counters were always added during upkeep but I was told they come back the same phase they were set aside. so which is it? I would like some elder input if possible thanks!^_^

Feast of Trumpets
Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: Teal/Green • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Set aside all of your human Heroes for one turn. On return, choose a number from 1 to 4. All players must place that number of cards from hand beneath own draw pile and draw an equal number of cards.

You are correct. There won't be any elders on this thread most likely, as this is not a controversial question.

Characters actually return during the prep phase:

Quote from: REG
Set Aside a Character

You may set aside a character with a set-aside enhancement or return a character from a set-aside area to your territory. You may only return characters from your set-aside area during your Preparation Phase.

This should obviously be modified to say: "You may only return characters from your set-aside area during your Preparation Phase (except for a special ability on a card)." But the difference, although somewhat subtle between coming back during your upkeep phase and prep phase, can be important.

For instance, you may want to set aside all of your characters with The Sabbath, but you have a guy set aside (maybe with Provisions) ready to come back. You can set everyone else aside, then bring the Provisioned Hero back and attack with him, since you can bring the characters back at any time during your prep phase. Most people bring them back right away, so it is a reasonable assumption (and one that I made for a long time myself) to think they come back during upkeep. The only things that can happen during upkeep phase are counters being added and triggered effects (like Set Fire) activating.

The professor is correct if I have learned anything from judges at tournaments.

ok so just to clarify no matter when i set my heros aside they come back during my prep phase and i can choose when during my prep phase to bring them back.(say after activating an artifact if i want)

The reason I ask for Elder input is because 3 different people at my playgroup believe it is played where if you set them aside after battle then they don't return till after battle. so if another elder could also comment on here that would be Greatly appreciated ^_^

Okay now I have to go find the thread where I got the opposite ruling from, because I got it from this board.
