When Saul is about to be discarded, does it become paul or does it have to be converted?

Saul/Paul at face value is an evil character, and when sent to deck or discard resets to face value.

When Saul is about to be discarded, does it become paul or does it have to be converted?
The only way that Saul becomes Paul is through a Convert ability.
Saul/Paul at face value is an evil character, and when sent to deck or discard resets to face value.
Just as an additional point of note: If Paul was discarded, he can be healed at any time during that turn and returned as Paul still.
