Title: Questions Regarding Side Battles
Post by: TheIrishman on July 22, 2020, 04:33:26 PM
I have some questions regarding the very messy subject of side battles.
Example scenario: Deborah is rescuing against 2 random evil characters

Question 1: If a side battle ability is targeting all characters on one side of the battle, does my opponent get SI?  Suppose I play Sword of the Lord to initiate a side battle between the 2 evil characters in the scenario above.

Question 2: How do the phrases “in battle” and “all opposing characters” work in the context of side battles?  Once the side battle above has begun suppose my opponent plays Siegeworks on the evil character he controls in the side battle.  Would Deborah be underdecked as well or just the opposing character in the side battle?

Answer 1: When creating a side battle, you get to choose the order that the characters enter the side battle. You can make your character enter first, and then your opponent's character, so that, if the evil character's numbers would cause a mutual destruction or stalemate, you would get initiative because your opponent played the last card.

There might be some nuance to this based on whether the battle is between characters that were in battle/territory, but I couldn't find anything in the REG.

Answer 2: Cards that refer to "in battle" or "opposing characters" only target cards in the current battle in which they are played. If the card said "in the field of battle" then it would refer to all battles, the main battle and/or the side battle.

Noah is correct on question 2.

On question 1, because the removing of the character from the first battle coincides with the beginning of the side battle, the ability doesn't leave the player without a character in battle, so it doesn't grant SI.

Oops, I totally misread question #1. :P

Awesome thanks guys.  Follow up question: suppose my opponent played Death of Unrighteous in that side battle; would Deborah's protect ability still be active while the side battle is occurring and thus protect lost souls from the shuffle?

Yes, ongoing abilities from the main battle are still active during the side battle unless something deactivates them. Notably, Cloud Moses' "while in battle" deactivates during the side battle (unless he's in it), since he's not in the current battle.

If the card said "in the field of battle" then it would refer to all battles, the main battle and/or the side battle.

If it also reads “During battle,” then that includes the main and side battle.

Once a side battle has begun, can I play Woes to negate the enhancement in the main battle that initiated the side battle?  I know side battles are technically a separate battle phase so I feel like the enhancement that initiated the side battle would kinda be CBI, but this definitely seems like it could be a gray area so I figured I would ask.

Yes, it would negate the side battle and you'd go back to the main battle.

Yes, it would negate the side battle and you'd go back to the main battle.

Adding to this, you'd just have to make sure all abilities in the side battle resolve first before you can play Woes.  For example, two heroes are in the side battle.  Their SA's activate and resolve.  Any weapons on them also activate and resolve.  Once these abilities resolve, and nothing's pending, you can play Woes on the SB enh.

Also, once the side battle is complete, the side battle ability is functionally CBI, as everything that resulted from it happened in a now completed phase. So you'd have to play Woes (or an Enhancement) during the side battle.
