Does a protect fort protect weapons on a character also?

No.  They specify the cards they protect, and cards like weapons are not included.

Depends. If it protects contents, it protects the weapons since they're on the Heroes and the Heroes are in the Fortress. If it specifically protects Heroes, weapons are fair game.

That's true.  I got the impression by the question that it was protect forts like Assyrian Camp and the like, not the type that heroes (or other characters) hide out in.

But my answer stands as correct: They specify the cards they protect.  You're right, in certain cases where the cards are in the fortress, if it says contents then it includes all cards inside, but again it will be specified.
