Title: Placing site and fortresses

When I play in my territory fortresses and sites, are they facedown in their own pile like artifact or face up ?

No they are face up and all fortresses are active at the same time you don't have to activate them like you do artifacts. Special abilities on single-color sites are always active, and special abilities on multi-color sites are active only while they are in battle.

All cards are played face-up by default. Artifacts placed in the Artifact Pile are one exception to this, there are also some cards with special abilities that let you play/place other cards into play face-down.
