Title: Peace Treaty
Post by: The Guardian on September 06, 2009, 12:36:41 AM
Can NT Heroes use the banding ability on Peace Treaty?

Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: Purple • Ability: 1 / 5 • Class: None • Special Ability: O.T. Hero ignores one evil brigade except orange, or may band to a human Hero.

No.

I would think the "may band..." clause is dependent on the primary subject of the sentence, or else it doesn't make sense, because enhancements can't band.

In other words, +1 with Janissary.

I agree with the aforementioned. The O.T. Hero can only used the banding.

Yes.  The comma makes all the difference.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention that...  ::)

Hey,

Actually, I think the comma shouldn't be there.  You put a comma with a conjunction if the conjunction is joining two independent or dependent clauses.  The part of peace treaty's ability that comes after the 'or' is neither because it doesn't have a subject.  Rather the 'or' is just creating a compound verb and both parts of the verb relate to the same subject, the O.T. hero.

+1 (mostly) Sir Nobody.

The SA on Peace Treaty is not a grammatically correct sentence. There are two possibilities...

1) An extraneous comma was accidentally added (the scenario SN described)
2) The word "hero" or equivalent was omitted.

Lacking any further evidence, I would think that the problem lies with the excessive punctuation.

I really hate it when people use commas incorrectly, commas are so easy to understand.

 ;)

On a side note, I think it will be really funny when Peace Treaty is given errata:

"O.T. hero ignores one evil brigade except orange or may band to a human hero."

The comma is just fine here based on how some SA's are written.  Because it IS there then as written the "or" separates two distinctly different SA's.

Take this card:

Aaron
Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Green • Ability: 6 / 4 • Class: None • Special Ability: May band to Miriam. Holy of Holies cannot be discarded while Aaron is in play. • Play As: May band to Miriam. Protect all active Holy of Holies artifacts from discard while Aaron is in play. • Identifiers: OT Male Human, Prophet, Tabernacle High Priest • Verse: Exodus 4:14

I've learned long ago to throw out grammar and punctuation as it applies to true English.  Redemption has its own grammar rules.

But this is an entirely different situation. If you make the comma a period, then it wouldn't make any sense. "O.T. Hero ignores one evil brigade except orange, or may band to a human Hero." First of all, the word "or" seems to indicate the O.T. Hero may do one or the other. Secondly, "may band to a human Hero" makes no sense, considering that it's coming from an Enhancement card. If it were the Special Ability on a hero, sure. But since this is an Enhancement, and Enhancements can't band in and of themselves, then the question remains, who can band to a human hero? The answer is the only type of hero mentioned on the card, i.e. an O.T. Hero.
