So I'm running some classes teaching kids to play Redemption. Some of the experiences older players got into an argument over how the new wording on Son of God works. It says 'Negate and rescue a lost soul' which I just figured stopped the lost soul ability and you get the lost soul. Can I get some clarification please?

Your intuition is correct. If the Lost Soul has a special ability, that SA will be negated and the Lost Soul is rescued. For instance, the "Rejoice" LS from the J Starter deck says, "When this Lost Soul is rescued, each player must draw 1." If you rescue that Lost Soul with Son of God, the draw will be negated so neither player will get to draw 1.
