Title: Negating Artifacts
Post by: Ammian on December 07, 2010, 04:39:20 PM
Yep, it looks like I'm on another question spree.  Still waiting for the Schaef's reply on me getting a custom head that reads "The Inquirer."  :P

♦Anyway, I was wondering about how negating artifacts works.  If an artifact is discarded, is it automatically negated?
♦If so, why would enhancements say "negate and discard one active artifact [or covenant]"?  Wouldn't "discard one active artifact" (ex: Mask of Self-Glorification) do the same thing?
♦Also, if discarding an artifact does not negate it, what about shuffling an artifact into the draw deck?  If that doesn't negate it, why would Angelic Advice say, "Active artifacts are shuffled but not negated."
→Are these just examples of Cactus being annoying and printing stuff that should be assumed?  If so, how does this discard v negate and discard v shuffle deal work?

Thanks,
Ian Vroon

1) not necessarily
2a)  because getting rid of an artifact is not necessarily negating it.
2b)No, it would not...at least not right away.
3) shuffling does not necessarily negate the ability

Cactus is not being annoying.  You are missing some vital information.  That information is the "phases of a turn."  Cards you are referencing are enhancements which only can be played during the battle phase.  An artifact's ability that is not negated still is benefiting the holder until the end of the battle phase even if the artifact is discarded or shuffle.  Once the battle phase is over, then the artifact's ability stops working because it is not around during the new phase.

I hope that helps.   :)

That does help.

So what's the point of Holy of Holies saying, "Cannot be negated during the battle phase" instead of the good ole "cannot be negated," which it used to say?  Is that Cactus being annoying?

when you discard an artifact it is still in action until the phase that you discarded it in is still happening. so if it says negate and discard an artifact it just means that it is negated unless it cannot be negated like HoH or CoM then it still works until the phase is over

It means that Holy of Holies can be negated in other phases, but not the battle phase.
