Title: Negate a search
Post by: Lex1122 on June 27, 2018, 10:32:35 AM
If my opponent has evil characters in battle that were searched out by an ability. But on the new evil characters it says banding can’t be negated. I then play faith of Samuel and band in John the revalator who negates evil characters. Does this cascade the negatable initial search for the other EC? Does the band never happen?

Could you please type out the exact situation? Like Oscar and Matthew are playing, Oscar attacks with X and Matthew does Y....thanks

If EC A says "Search for and band to EC B" and EC B says "Banding abilities cannot be negated" and you block with EC A, search EC B out of deck and band to it, then John gets banded in, EC B would get put back in the deck because of the search ability being negated and banding being CBN wouldn't affect the situation. Not sure if this is what you were asking but its my best guess.

Alex. Takes out Paul (promo).
Jeremy. Takes out Talmai, son of Anak n searches for his bro Sheshai and he gets his bro ahiman which makes band abilities CBN.
Alex. Then plays FOS. Band to John the revalator who negates EC’s.

Does the search ability being negated stop them from being in battle?

Yes, the two ECs that were searched out go back to the location they were searched from.

^Correct.

In that instance, Ahiman does not retroactively make Talmai and Sheshai CBN.

An important principle to remember is that abilities cannot gain (or lose) CBN, CBP or CBI after they have activated--they either have it or they don't, and that doesn't change for as long as the ability is in effect.

If it had Gone Ahiman > Talmai > Sheshai. Would it have still been negated?

Even if all their band abilities are CBN I don't think it stops the search from being undone.

My understanding has always been that the banding would "stick" even though you negated the search.

I suppose that would be consistent with how play abilities work. Even if they EC's stick though their abilities would be negated (except the band) due to cascade, correct?

This is what I thought to be the case as well, which is why I both asked the OP to specify the line of play, and ask for clarification

But your Not cascading the band. You negate cascading the search of those you banded in? Right?

that is my understanding - anything that isnt CBN/CBP

Quick jab at "cascade negation" I think it is not very intuitive and overall not a great mechanic . . . moving on

So, yes you would normally cascade the banding, BUT because the banding portion cannot be "undone" you can attempt to undo the search, but they stay out because of a different ability that cannot be undone.

It's one of those things that makes sense to some people and others not so much...we've been down that road several times over the years... ::)
