Title: Martyring Enoch
Post by: Korunks on April 14, 2009, 01:18:34 PM
This question came up at our playgroup, so I am posting it here to make sure I ruled it correctly.  So to start I play Enoch:

Enoch

Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: White • Ability: 7 / 8 • Class: None • Special Ability: Enoch may be removed from the game, but is prevented from being discarded. • Errata: Enoch may be removed from the game, but is protected from being discarded. • Identifiers: OT Male Human, Prophet • Verse: Genesis 5:23-24 • Availability: Patriarchs booster packs (Rare) • Background

I end my turn, my opponent draws and the CM's Enoch:

Christian Martyr

Type: Grim Reaper • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Discard any Hero in play. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Revelation 11:7 • Availability: A Deck (L), A Deck (UL)), B Deck (L), C Deck (L), C Deck (UL), E Deck, and H Deck

I figured that since Enoch had yet to hit the field of battle his SA did not activate and he is discarded, is this the correct ruling our does his protect work from the moment he is placed in the Field of play??

Unless otherwise specified, special abilities only last until the end of the phase. After the Battle Phase, Enoch is no longer protected from discard and is susceptible to cards like Christian Martyr.

enohc is still protected from d/c even from evil doms unless it's fbtn, then he isn't protected and he gets discarded

Tim:  Really I thought once activated Enoch's ability was permanent.  In the REG it lists protect as an ongoing ability, doesn't that mean it continues?  I am not trying to argue just trying to understand.

New Raven BR:  But does activate immediatly or only after he enters battle?

His ability only activates in the field of battle.  So he can be CMed in territory before and after battle.

Judas Iscariot (Priests version) is a good example of an ongoing protect once he enters battle.  Other than that Special Abilities only happen during battle and they end after the character leaves battle at the end of the battle phase.

*EDIT*  in other words:  Enoch's ability is not permanent because the card doesn't state it.

"Ongoing" is as opposed to "instant." Instant abilities are one-time actions like "capture", "discard", or "heal." You do it once, and it's done. Ongoing abilities last for an entire phase, like "protect", "prevent", or "access sites". The distinction is important for things like "interrupt the battle"; this ability will interrupt all ongoing abilities but only an instant ability if it is played by an opponent, is removing you from battle, and is the last one played.

Characters' special abilities only activate when entering battle. No character has an ability that you can use just by putting it in play. A few, like Aaron, say that they last while they remain in play. These must activate in battle first, and then last for the rest of the given duration rather than becoming inactive at the end of battle.

+1  with Tim because he worded it better than I did.

Ok that makes sense, so I ruled it correctly, but may have been using Enoch incorrectly in other games.  Thanks Guys!!

wait, what? Judas is protected in his territory after battle? that means that Lydia, Job and all them too? woah... Judas has now become a star in my eyes.

Judas: Protect this evil character from convert and discard abilities on opponent’s cards while he remains in play. Cannot be negated.

Job: Protect Job from discard and capture abilities.
Lydia: Lydia is protected from capture.

Judas has the "while he remains in play" clause, so it does not go away after battle. Lydia and Job have no such luck.
